It is a faith that is rooted and grounded in the God who has revealed Himself in Jesus Christ and continues to reveal His will through the Scriptures.<\/p><p>Historically Baptists have opposed creeds, but have through the years issued a number of confessions of faith. The basic purpose of a confession of faith is to express what one group of Baptists believes at a given time. These expressions of faith are not creeds, since the word creed implies authority and finality. Baptists have traditionally held that while a statement of faith expresses the consensus of opinion of a Baptist group, it is not to be regarded as infallible or final. No Baptist considers himself\/ herself infallible in matters of religious faith. Neither do Baptists desire the authority to prescribe what other people must believe. Individual freedom and congregational church government lie at the heart of this refusal to impose an external authority.<\/p><p>The purpose of Baptist confessions of faith has been to define what a particular group of Baptists believes. These expressions of faith have usually not been written just to provide a doctrinal statement, but have been called into existence to meet some practical need, such as to indicate doctrinal consensus, to quiet a controversy, to instruct a convert, or to explain a position vis-a-vis a particular question, e.g. baptism or the nature of church government. Most Baptist confessions have been written for a specific purpose.<\/p><p>Common features can be identified as running through various confessions of faith that represent a continuity of Baptist belief. Some of these beliefs are shared with other Christian and Protestant groups. Others are distinctive. The unity and coherence of Baptists can be seen in six key convictions, which they hold.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-aafecc7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"aafecc7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Supreme Authority<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0988035 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0988035\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The supreme authority is God as He has been revealed in Jesus Christ. Closely related is the Bible as the authority in all matters of faith and practice. Baptists are noncreedal people and their ultimate appeal has always been to the Scriptures rather than to any confession of faith that they have published.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-87186c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"87186c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Believer's Baptism<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-05b4a14 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"05b4a14\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is one of the most conspicuous convictions of Baptists. Baptism is an indication of the experience of the new birth. It must therefore be a Baptism of believers only. If the Christian life, as Paul indicates (Romans 6), is a sharing in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, and if it means a dying to the old life and a rising to the new life, then the act of baptism should reflect this understanding. It is for this reason Baptists insist on Believer's baptism and baptism by immersion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9627cff elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9627cff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Regenerate Church Membership<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c34d058 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c34d058\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Churches are composed of believers only. Baptists insist that the church be composed of those who have been gathered by Christ and have placed their trust in Him. The membership of the church is therefore composed of those who give clear evidence of their Christian faith and experience. As the basis of their church life they covenant with God and with one another to walk together in Christian obedience and service.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0c1d782 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0c1d782\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Priesthood of Believers<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6549ce6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6549ce6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The doctrine of the priesthood of all believers means the equality of all Christians in the life of the church in both responsibilities and privileges. This means not only that the individual Christian may serve as a minister to other members, but also confers upon each member of a church equal rights, privileges and responsibilities in determining the affairs of the church. The church officers - pastors and deacons - have special responsibilities that are derived from the consent of the church, but they do not have a unique priestly status.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3b637c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d3b637c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Independence of the Local Church<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a63dc94 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a63dc94\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Baptists believe that a properly constituted church (i.e. made up of baptised believers) is fully equipped to worship and serve Christ and need not derive its authority from any source, other than Christ, outside its own life. Baptists have not generally understood the principle of the autonomy of the local church to mean that it is completely isolated and detached from other churches. The local church is but one manifestation of the Body of Christ, and as individual Christians, are to pray for one another and maintain communion with one another. Individual churches testify to their unity in Christ by forming associations or conventions through which they seek counsel and advice and cooperate in common concerns. Many Baptist churches cooperate fully in interdenominational and ecumenical bodies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-68b5e2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"68b5e2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Religious Liberty \u2013 Separation of Church and State<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9528705 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9528705\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>From their earliest days, Baptists have insisted that the church and state should be separate. The church must be free to be Christ's church, determining its own life and charting its own course in obedience to Christ without outside interference. Baptists have always been in the forefront of the struggle for religious freedom.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>College Profile Return to Home Baptist Beliefs and Confessions Baptists are a community of living faith rooted in the one true God who has revealed himself in Jesus Christ and his will in the Holy Scriptures. Although Baptists have always opposed creeds, they have written many confessions at different times, the purpose of which is to express the beliefs of individual Baptist groups in different eras. A covenant is not the same as a creed, because a &quot;creed&quot; implies authority and finality. Traditionally, Baptists have believed that the covenant is only a consensus of a certain group of Baptists and cannot be regarded as infallible or final because no Baptist would claim to be infallible in faith. In addition, Baptists will not formulate religious rules for others because they emphasize personal freedom and church-government system, so they will not impose religious authority on others. For this reason, the Baptist Confession is only a statement of faith for an individual Baptist group. However, the purpose of writing a confession is not simply to provide doctrinal explanations, but to meet practical needs, such as explaining doctrinal consensus, suppressing arguments and objections, teaching new believers, and clarifying positions on special issues. Therefore, most Baptist confessions are written for specific purposes. The common features of these covenants all reflect the Baptist beliefs. Some of these beliefs are similar to those of other Christian denominations; others are unique to Baptists. However, Baptists are generally united in their beliefs regarding the following six points: God, the ultimate authority, is the highest authority, and has been revealed through Jesus Christ. Furthermore, the Bible is the authoritative basis for faith and practice. Since Baptists are &quot;non-creedal,&quot; they appeal only to the authority of Scripture and not to the Baptist covenant. Believe and be baptized Believe and be baptized is the most distinctive belief of the Baptist Church. Baptism is a symbol of the experience of rebirth, and only believers can be baptized. As Paul indicates in Romans 6, the Christian life is a participation in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, so the ritual of baptism should reflect the believer&#039;s abandonment of the old and embrace of the new. For this reason, the Baptist Church insists that only believers can be baptized, and that baptism is performed by immersing the whole body in water. A born-again church can only be composed of believers who have been born again and saved. Baptists believe that the church is made up of a small number of people who are called and who have placed their complete trust in Christ. Therefore, all church members must clearly demonstrate their faith and experience in Christ, and church life must be based on the covenant between believers and God, and be committed to obedience to Christ and service to others. The priesthood is within the church, and all believers have equal rights and responsibilities. Every believer should not only serve other members, but also allow other members to have equal rights and responsibilities to handle church affairs. As for church officials, such as pastors and deacons, although they have special responsibilities, they should not enjoy a unique priestly status. The Church-Autonomous Baptist Church firmly believes that a properly established local church (a church composed of baptized believers) is qualified to worship and serve Christ autonomously without having to seek any basis for authority, because Christ is the only source of authority. Since each local church belongs only to the Body of
