class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Rethinking the Meaning of Learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000As graduation is fast approaching, my mind is brimming with gratitude. Time is limited, yet God\u2019s grace transcends the constraints of time. The entire period throughout which I pursued my Master of Divinity program and my Master of Theology program has been filled with abundant grace, allowing someone like me, who tends to be lazy, ample time to enjoy again the pleasures of learning. <em><strong>Under the patient guidance of the faculty members, I have once again understood the significance of \u201cwhat to study\u201d and \u201cwhy study\u201d for those who serve God. <\/em><\/strong> The question of why we should study serves as a cautionary reminder to individuals like me, who are already engaged in pastoral work, not to become lost in the burdensome workload of being a pastor. Learning possesses intrinsic value, hence my sharing is focused on the edification of the seminary. I believe this also serves as pastors\u2019 own critique of themselves. While perfection remains elusive, the teachings I have received here have awakened me to the realization that I must not passively succumb to the current trends of the times. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Chinese philosopher Deng Xiao-mang issues a warning in his article \u201cWhat is the Purpose of Learning?\u201d He said that contemporary education has faltered due to the prevalence of utilitarians. From parents to society to students themselves, all are driven by the pursuit of \u201csuccess.\u201d Educational institutions have become \u201cbreeding grounds for \u2018refined egoists.\u2019\u201d This is purportedly considered \u201cbeneficial\u201d for students, enabling them to get ahead of others. Deng Xiao-mang further argues that in the past, when contemplating the desired outcomes of education for future generations, a distinction between individuals of decency and vulgarity still existed. However, the current state of education has lost its purpose. It has primarily devolved into vocational training, with students pursuing education solely for the sake of \u201cmuddling through to get a diploma.\u201d The crisis at hand is that \u201cpeople\u2019s distinctiveness is eroded through education, resulting in sophisticated individuals.\u201d This is a far cry from engaging with knowledge in passionate debates; instead, it becomes a mere parroting of information. I agree with his observation that in the current atmosphere, after years of rigorous education, we have ultimately been shaped into preprogrammed answering machines. Learning has lost its fun; without interest in learning, we are left with no choice but to merely \u201cmuddle through to get a diploma.\u201d When it reaches the point of \u201cmuddling through to get a diploma,\u201d one is as good as dead. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Breaking Free from Utilitarian Learning<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000I thank the Lord that the seminary teachers make the effort to dismantle the mindset of \u201cmuddling through to get a diploma,\u201d discouraging studying solely for employment or career advancement. Echoing the principles of education at the seminary, I would like to paraphrase Chinese educator Lufei Kui\u2019s article written in 1923, \u201cWhy Do We Study?\u201d Lufei presented five reasons for studying: character development, acquiring knowledge, developing skills, vocational pursuits, and personal cultivation. Additionally, Lufei pointed out three purposes regarding what studying is for and not for, all refuting the utilitarian approach to studying: studying for the sake of studying without practical application; studying solely for future application without immediate relevance; and studying not for monetary gains. These perspectives align with the tireless dedication of the seminary teachers throughout the years. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000<em><strong>In tumultuous times, reading more and engaging with good books becomes even more crucial. <\/em><\/strong> This was the motto I embraced during my time at HKBTS, and it remains an integral part of my being that cannot be taken away. I would like to conclude with the words of Tang Chun-I in \u201cThe Importance of Reading\u201d: \u201cAlthough books came later in human culture, they serve as a mirror reflecting the entirety of human culture. It is through this mirror that we can understand the general nature of human culture and transition from the natural world to the world of humanities. &#8230; Reading involves placing our small mirror in front of the vast mirror of books, allowing our small mirror to reflect the knowledge and truths illuminated by countless wise and intelligent minds throughout history.\u201d <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000<em><strong>Years of learning at the seminary have taught me not to be deceived by utilitarianism and not to \u201cmuddle through\u201d my days simply to \u201cget a diploma.\u201d <\/em><\/strong> HKBTS has made me understand that the purpose of learning is to understand the Lord under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and, in turn, expand the depth of our thinking. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alben Wong (Th.M.) Rethinking the meaning of learning Graduation is imminent, and my heart is filled with gratitude. Time is limited, but grace transcends the limitations of time. This crisis is that &quot;education has worn away people&#039;s edges, making them people who are well versed in the ways of the world.&quot; However, this is not a heated discussion of knowledge, but parroting. I like what he said that in this era, after years of hard teaching, we have finally been shaped into high-quality answering machines. Learning has lost its fun; without interest, of course, we have to &quot;get a diploma&quot;. When it comes to &quot;getting a diploma&quot;, it can be said that the corpse is just waiting to be buried. Breaking the utilitarian learning Thank God, teachers are trying to break our mentality of &quot;getting a diploma&quot;. We don&#039;t study for employment, nor do we get an extra degree to expand our careers. I would like to use the article &quot;Why do we need to study&quot; written by Chinese educator Lu Feikui in 1923 to echo the education of the seminary: Why do we need to study? The answer is five reasons: personality, knowledge, skills, profession, and self-cultivation. Lu Feikui also proposed three negative answers, all of which deny the utilitarianism of studying: studying is for the sake of studying, and one should not think of applying it; studying for application is to save for future use, not for immediate use or for every need; one should not have the intention of selling books for money. This is exactly the key point that the teacher has been teaching tirelessly for many years. In the chaotic times, we should read more and read more good books; this is the motto I learned in &quot;Baptist Theological Seminary&quot;, and no one can take it away from me. Finally, I would like to conclude with the words of Tang Junyi in &quot;On the Importance of Reading&quot;: &quot;Although books came after human culture, they are the mirror of the entire human culture. People must look through this mirror to understand the general outline of the entire human culture and move from the natural world to the human world.
