In his book <em>The End of Youth Ministry? <\/em>, Root uses a fictitious story to illustrate the youth ministry in the contemporary United States, in which he brings up the concept of the \u201cwaiting room.\u201d The \u201cwaiting room\u201d in the story functions as a platform where people of all ages, young and old, come to this particular space to tell their life stories honestly, as well as pray for and build up the lives of one another. Based on the true reality of America, Root constructs the story of a young female evangelical worker, J., and uses her experience <em><strong>to diagnose the challenges facing the churches today, which are busy organizing activities to attract young people to church, while ignoring the most important thing in youth ministry \u2013 sharing lives and walking together with them<\/em><\/strong>. Although Root\u2019s viewpoints are derived from specific circumstances, our teachers think they are relevant to the situation we face in Hong Kong. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Like in America, there are quite a number of Hong Kong churches whose youth ministry only emphasizes holding various kinds of activities to appeal to young people, while overlooking the importance of providing them with an education in faith. Youth ministers easily get worn out by too much activity, leaving them little time to spend or walk with young people. Despite all the physical exertion, the ministry can be disappointing. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>How to Walk with Young People<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Prof. Ng thinks Andrew Root\u2019s criticism is mainly against churches that hold too many different kinds of events, forfeiting an opportunity to see God\u2019s work in the lives of young people. Prof. Ng considers that the right amount of activity and programs such as discipleship training will not be of concern. Contact outside the church setting, like having meals together and interacting with young people in order to build up relationships with them, is equally important. Churches, therefore, need to balance between having \u201ctoo few\u201d and \u201ctoo many\u201d activity programs. Moving toward either extreme is not ideal. He strongly feels that a successful youth minister often spends time with young people, walks with them, and is actively involved in their lives outside of church functions. The most important and effective pastoral care often takes place not in formal fellowship and gatherings, but in engaging in the lives of young people. A hectic activity schedule will hinder efforts to build a true rapport with them. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000President Cho points out some misleading ideas about youth ministry, saying some people believe that they must be fully responsive to young people\u2019s aspirations and needs, but avoid lecturing them about right and wrong when walking with them as partners. But to him, it is in fact necessary for them to also get the right guidance along the way. In addition, from talking with youth pastors, he deeply feels the importance of establishing a relationship with young people, which is the key to youth ministry for every generation. Both youth pastors and young people can share their viewpoints on the basis of a healthy relationship, making teaching possible and effective. Some alumni have shared with him that <em><strong>young people do not need adults acting as \u201cteachers\u201d to instruct them. Rather, they need them to walk and establish a bond with them and based on that give them advice and instruction. Indeed, young people are drawn to spiritual things. <\/em><\/strong> These insights gave him much food for reflection and inspiration. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000<strong>Prof. Wong Fook-kong<\/strong> also agrees that relationships are important, adding that every youth pastor has his\/her disposition and style. <em><strong>It is necessary to discover and make good use of our gifts when it comes to shepherding young people, and establishing rapport with them according to our character strengths will yield twice the result with half the effort. <\/em><\/strong> In his sharing, President Cho speaks of an alumnus who has a very good relationship with young people from his church. The way he goes about forging close ties with them is not by holding all kinds of activities, but primarily by having meals together and chatting with them, as well as enjoying regular Bible studies with them. Prof. Wong also mentions that this alumnus talks humorously, which is his advantage. In his book \u201cThe End of Youth Ministry?\u201d, Lu Enzhe used a fictional story to discuss the phenomenon of youth ministry in the United States today, in which he mentioned the concept of \u201cwaiting room\u201d. In the story, the \u201cwaiting room\u201d refers to a platform for sharing life stories across generations, where adults and young people can share their personal life stories honestly, pray for each other, and bear life. Lu Enzhe made up the story of preacher J based on the real situation in the United States, and used it to criticize the current church for being busy preparing a series of activities to attract young people to church, but ignoring that what youth ministry really needs is the sharing of life and companionship. Although Lu Enzhe\u2019s views are situational, the teachers believe that they are also quite valuable for reference in Hong Kong. Like the United States, many churches in Hong Kong only emphasize holding various activities in youth ministry in order to attract young people to church. However, too many activities have neglected the faith and life education of young people. Pastors and preachers are also exhausted and cannot spare time to share and walk with young people. After being busy, the results of the ministry are not satisfactory. How to Walk with Young People Professor Wu believes that Lu Enzhe&#039;s criticism is mainly against the church holding too many activities of various kinds, which makes it impossible for God to work in the lives of young people. He believes that there is no problem with a moderate amount of activities and plans, such as disciple training, and it is also important to walk with young people outside the system after the activities, such as eating and communicating with young people to build relationships. Therefore, the church must balance &quot;no activity agenda&quot; and &quot;too many activity agendas&quot;. Both extremes are not ideal. He deeply feels that successful youth pastors spend a lot of time walking with young people and living with young people outside of gatherings. The most important pastoral care actually occurs outside of formal fellowship and gatherings. Living with young people is the most effective way to pastor them. Too many activities will hinder pastors from truly building relationships with them. Dean Cao raised some doubts about pastoring young people, pointing out that some people think that when walking with young people, they should go along with them in everything and not talk about right or wrong, but he believes that young people also need guidance from the side. In addition, Dean Cao talked with the youth pastors and felt deeply the importance of establishing relationships with young people. This is a necessary key to doing youth work in every era. On the basis of relationships, both parties can share their views, making teaching possible and effective. An alumnus shared with him that young people do not need the role of &quot;teachers&quot; to teach them, but to walk with them, build relationships, and give advice and teaching on the basis of relationships. Young people actually like spiritual things; this gave him new reflections and inspiration. Professor Huang Fuguang also agreed with the importance of relationships, and pointed out that every youth pastor also has his own characteristics and style. When pastoring young people, you must discover and make good use of your own gifts, and establish relationships with young people according to your own \u3000\u3000\u66f9\u9662\u9577\u63d0\u51fa\u4e00\u4e9b\u95dc\u65bc\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u7267\u990a\u7684\u7591\u60d1\uff0c\u6307\u51fa\u6709\u4e9b\u4eba\u8a8d\u70ba\u8207\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u540c\u884c\uff0c\u5c31\u8981\u51e1\u4e8b\u9806\u61c9\u4ed6\u5011\uff0c\u4e0d\u8981\u8ac7\u8ad6\u5c0d\u932f\uff0c\u4f46\u4ed6\u8a8d\u70ba\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u4e5f\u9700\u8981\u4eba\u5f9e\u65c1\u6307\u5c0e\u3002\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u66f9\u9662\u9577\u8207\u9752\u5e74\u7267\u8005\u50be\u8ac7\uff0c\u5f9e\u4e2d\u6df1\u611f\u8207\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u5efa\u7acb\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u91cd\u8981\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u6bcf\u500b\u5e74\u4ee3\u505a\u9752\u5c11\u5e74\u5de5\u4f5c\u7684\u5fc5\u8981\u95dc\u9375\u3002\u5728\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u4e4b\u4e0a\uff0c\u96d9\u65b9\u624d\u80fd\u5206\u4eab\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u89c0\u9ede\uff0c\u4f7f\u6559\u5c0e\u8b8a\u6210\u53ef\u80fd\u548c\u6709\u6548\u3002\u6709\u6821\u53cb\u8207\u4ed6\u5206\u4eab\uff0c\u8ac7\u53ca\u5e74\u8f15\u4eba\u4e0d\u662f\u8981\u300c\u8001\u5e2b\u300d\u7684\u89d2\u8272\u53bb\u6559\u5c0e\u4ed6\u5011\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u8981\u8207\u4ed6\u5011\u540c\u884c\uff0c\u5efa\u7acb\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u5728\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u4e0a\u7d66\u4e88\u610f\u898b\u548c\u6559\u5c0e\uff0c\u5e74\u8f15\u4eba\u5176\u5be6\u4e5f\u559c\u6b61\u5c6c\u9748\u7684\u4e8b\uff1b\u9019\u7d66\u4ed6\u4e00\u756a\u65b0\u7684\u7701\u601d\u548c\u555f\u767c\u3002
