Prof. Andres Tang and I started by discussing Dietrich Bonhoeffer\u2019s thoughts on ethics. After that, a series of Theology Salons in all shapes and forms have been held inside and outside the campus, as well as online. Some were solely organized by our seminary, and some co-organized with or supported by the alumni association, churches and other organizations. A wide range of topics have been covered including the Bible, church history, theology, pastoring, preaching, etc. (see table). <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Its Beginnings and Purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000I first came up with the idea of a Theology Salon during the exchange meeting of the President\u2019s Council on April 13 last year. At that time, we were discussing <em><strong>how the seminary can assist churches in the face of the society\u2019s current situation<\/em><\/strong>. I thought we can organize a few gatherings of about a hundred people, and the seminary can then take the opportunity to interact with two to three different churches. They may propose topics, such as the separation of church and state, for us to share with them. However, the seminary will accept their invitation on the condition that the topics must be helpful to the church, so that the seminary can properly address the church\u2019s needs. In addition, these would also be topics that our teachers have researched extensively, so it would not require them to do a lot of preparation work before sharing. To be candid, the workload of our teachers is quite heavy. Firstly, aside from regular teaching, they must also join all student-related activities, such as chapel services and camps, where we care for the students and grow with them. It is the natural duty of a teacher. Secondly, teachers must also seek excellence in their teaching. Thirdly, teachers must continuously study and conduct research. For teachers to fulfil all these aspects, their time must be fully occupied; so, sharing on an unfamiliar topic is too difficult. The seminary is looking forward to sharing on those topics that concern churches and our alumni and are within our capacity with you in the near future. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Features of HKBTS Theology Salons<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Though the salons are held without much extra preparation by our teachers, participants can be confident to come and join them out of their trust in our teachers and me, knowing that our teachers have expertise in some research areas or academic disciplines. So, we come together to share with each other and exchange ideas. In each salon, I am the host who asks the teacher questions in order to stimulate our thinking and enhance interaction. As in a free-flowing discussion, the ideas expressed may not be well-thought and well-organized. This informality is a feature of our Theology Salons, which is not a speech or presentation of a written article. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000As Prof. Andres Tang said, in western culture, salons came into being in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The literate elites gathered to engage in witty and sparkling conversations, discussing such topics as current affairs and political issues, with coffee or drinks being served. There needs not to be any conclusion, and the key is to inspire thought and exchange ideas. In fact, the case for faith and theology is of no difference. In the past, people wanted to have quick answers, even eternal answers. However, by definition, <em><strong>theology does not provide eternal answers, but is a meditation and reflection on the Bible, drawing tentative conclusions<\/em><\/strong>. Therefore, the Theology Salon is a platform for pastors and believers to focus on their common concerns and to think theologically together. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000We are looking forward to have more collaboration between the seminary and churches as well as pastors in the future. Let\u2019s share with and listen to each other, and face the challenges of our changing society and church in solidarity. Professor Tang Shaoguang and I led the discussion on Bonhoeffer&#039;s ethical thought. After that, HKBS held a series of &quot;Theological Salons&quot; on campus, off campus, and later online. Some were hosted by the School alone, while others were co-hosted or sponsored with alumni associations, churches or other organizations. The topics covered a wide range of areas, including the Bible, church history, theology, pastoral care, preaching, etc. (see the attached table). Origin and Purpose The idea of &quot;Theological Salon&quot; came from the Dean&#039;s Council Exchange Meeting on April 13 last year. At that time, we discussed how the School could help the church face the current social situation. I thought of holding some gatherings with about 100 people, where the School could interact with two or three different churches; they would propose some topics to the School, such as the separation of church and state, and we would share with them. In addition, the condition for the church to invite our school is that these topics must be helpful to the church so that our school can respond to the needs of the church appropriately; and our teachers already have research experience on those topics and do not need to do much preparation before sharing. It is true that the teaching work of our teachers is arduous, because first, in addition to the usual regular teaching, they must also participate in all activities related to students, such as morning meetings, camps, etc.; this is an important part of our care for students and growth with them, and it is also the teacher&#039;s duty. Second, teaching must be refined. Third, research must be continuous. If the teachers want to complete the above three aspects of work, their time will be full. Therefore, if some topics that the church wants to explore are not the expertise of the teachers, it will be difficult for us to handle them. I hope that in the near future, our school will actively share with the church and alumni the topics that you hope everyone will think about together. The characteristics of the &quot;Theological Salon&quot; The characteristic of our &quot;Theological Salon&quot; is that there is not much preparation in advance. Everyone comes to participate based on their trust in me and the teachers. They know that they have research and experience in certain topics and academic fields, so they come together to share with each other and start a conversation. The way it proceeds is that I ask questions to the teachers to inspire thinking and communicate with each other. The conversation may not be well thought out, which is different from the way of writing articles, but this is also the feature of the &quot;Theological Salon&quot;. As Teacher Deng Shaoguang said, in Western culture, &quot;Salon&quot; is a way to discuss issues in a relaxed manner, which originated from intellectuals in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. While enjoying coffee and drinks, they discussed social current affairs and political issues that they were concerned about. They do not need to have any conclusions, but mainly stimulate each other&#039;s thoughts and focus on communication. In fact, faith and theology are the same. In the past, people just wanted to listen and get an answer, an eternal answer, but according to the definition of theology, theology does not provide an eternal answer, but only meditation and thinking on the Bible to obtain temporary results.
