Long before there are any signs of settlement for the political unrest which has lasted over half a year, there is the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease in our society. What kind of situation is Hong Kong society in? We really do not want to see any natural or human-made calamities. Who would like to live in terror? Who would like to get in a fluster? However, we should consider whether humankind has no responsibility for this situation? <em><strong>Or, do we have to acknowledge that both natural and human-made calamities are the outcomes of humans\u2019 failure in managing our society and nature well, as in the saying \u201cyou\u2019ve made your bed, now lie in it\u201d? <\/em><\/strong> This may be the judgment of \u201cgiving them over in sins\u201d mentioned in the Bible. God does not have to take the initiative to punish us. When He simply turns His face away a bit, withdrawing part of His providence and not restraining us from sinning, this is enough for us to reap what we have sown and fall into panic and confusion. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Humans are truly arrogant and imperious. We think that we can govern our society well on our own, creating a flourishing, prosperous and ever progressing world. We also believe that autonomous human reason is capable of comprehending the mysteries of nature; so, we recklessly manipulate everything with our technology, resulting in unimaginable chaos. The chaos whether in human society or in nature is swallowing up our lives, causing restlessness in our minds and bodies. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>The Never-forsaking God<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000<em><strong>In Lord Jesus\u2019s words, this is an \u201cunbelieving and perverse generation\u201d <\/em><\/strong> (Mt 17:17). <em><strong>God, however, has not forsaken us, evidenced by the fact that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. <\/em><\/strong> In the past, Christ dwelled among us in the flesh; now, He is with us in the Holy Spirit; and in the future, He will be with us in His glory. Christ\u2019s presence among us in the past is a presence of suffering: He went through human death\u2014suffered from the judgment of \u201cGod\u2019s absence.\u201d Christ\u2019s presence today is a presence of hope because His resurrection has brought us the promise, namely the end of death and the transformation of life. Christ\u2019s presence in the future is certainly a presence of glory in which everything will be consummated, with no privation. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000However, in our current situation, with the constant updates of verified infected cases from different media, and people queuing up for face masks, disinfectants and even toilet paper and rice, how can our hearts be at rest with all these endless stories? How much we hope that the life-threatening epidemic will halt soon and we can return to regular life. Yet, who can be sure of all these matters? <em><strong>For Christians, does the promise given by the resurrected Christ\u2014the end of death and the transformation of life\u2014truly keep us calm amidst the epidemic? This is an opportunity for life discipline, yet a tough one. <\/em><\/strong> It is natural for us to avoid things that are deadly and to strive for survival. The coming of death, however, is inevitable and unpredictable. So, can the eschatological promise granted to us by the resurrected Christ relieve our panic and anxiety here and now? This is definitely not a simple lesson. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Losing Control and Trusting in God<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000For a long period, humans probably got used to managing our own lives and manipulating nature; we deny contingencies and keep everything under control. Thus, we are not accustomed to losing control and trusting in a God who is outside ourselves; so, we do not know how to live in an out-of-control situation with our trust in God. A turbulent world reminds us of our inability to control; nevertheless, it helps us to be aware that we have to trust in God and learn to live in such a situation with humility. This kind of trusting relationship is not one of urging God to fulfil my desires, but of obeying His will. Instead of following the yearning of humans, we should learn to yield to the will of God (Mt 16:23). Otherwise, our sense of losing control will only drive us to further our desire for mastery, striving to become omniscient and omnipotent like God and bringing forth more significant disasters. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Not only do we have to fear God, but we must also abandon our one-sided wish and self-righteous attitude toward our society and nature. Possibly, when we recognize our blindness, we can hence respect other people and living things, understanding them better and approaching them correctly. Whether it is natural disasters or man-made disasters, they are not the situation we want to see. Who likes to fall into panic? Who wants to live in panic and fear? However, are human beings completely without responsibility for the situation we are in today? Or, we have to admit that whether it is natural disasters or man-made disasters, it is only because people themselves have not treated human society and the natural world well that they have caused today&#039;s results and ultimately suffered by themselves. This is the judgment of &quot;letting it be corrupted&quot; mentioned in the Bible. God does not need to deliberately take the initiative to punish us. As long as we turn a blind eye, limit His protection, and do not stop us from doing evil, we can suffer the consequences of our own actions and fall into panic all day long. Humans are indeed arrogant and domineering, thinking that they can properly govern their own society, prosper and progress on their own; they also think that human reason is enough to understand the mysteries of the natural world, so they wantonly use technology to control everything, resulting in unimaginable chaos. Whether it is the chaos in human society or the chaos in the natural world, they are swallowing up our lives and making it difficult for us to settle down. God is not far away from us This is what the Lord Jesus said, &quot;a generation of unbelief and perverseness&quot; (Matthew 17:17). However, God has not been far away from us because of this; the Word became flesh and lived among us, which is a clear proof. In the past, Christ was with us in the flesh; now He is with us in the Holy Spirit; in the future, He will be with us in glory. In the past, Christ&#039;s presence was a suffering presence; He experienced our kind of death - the judgment of &quot;God&#039;s absence&quot;. Today, Christ&#039;s presence is a hopeful presence, because His resurrection brings us the promise of the end of death and the transformation of life. In the future, Christ\u2019s presence will be an even more glorious presence, and all things will be complete without lack. However, in today\u2019s situation, we learn from different media outlets every day that the number of confirmed cases of infection has increased, and people are lining up to buy masks, disinfectants, and even toilet paper and rice. If this continues, how can we calm down? How we hope that the life-threatening epidemic will soon dissipate and life will return to normal. But who can say for sure? For Christians, can the promise given to us by the resurrected Christ - the end of death and the transformation of life - really help us face the epidemic calmly? This is a time for life practice, but it is not easy. Staying away from death and getting closer to life is a natural reaction. However, the approach of death is certain and unpredictable. So, can the final promises made by the resurrected Christ to us alleviate our fear and anxiety at this moment? This is definitely not an easy task.
