We walked through the streets and alleys of Yau Ma Tei with our tour guide, learning more about this old district that faces urban renewal.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Our first stop was Portland Street. Next to a number of cross-border bus stops is a new hotel towering over facilities of an old district. Our guide told us that tourism development in Hong Kong has put a lot of old-fashioned small shops out of business. Gone along with the small shops is the strong social bond that the community once shared.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000We then found ourselves in front of a church building with a tower. In the past when there were not so many high-rise buildings, the church tower used to look over the whole Yau Ma Tei. Pastors used to pray for the community at the top of the tower. At that time the church had a much closer relationship with local residents than it has with the community now.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000As we were pondering the problem of alienation, a caf\u00e9 on Tak Cheong Lane came into sight. It has an outward-facing fridge by the roadside with a sign that reads \u201cFor everyone.\u201d People may take what they need from this fridge, which has also become a small open platform for others to give food and drinks.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000We then arrived at Life Workshop on Hamilton Street where they sell old and new crafts, most of which come from closed small shops. Life Workshop serves as a consignment shop so that these crafts can stay in the market, hoping that this would perhaps keep the feeling of the good old days alive.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The tour has inspired me to reflect upon mission work in the community. The design of the church with a tower manifests the church\u2019s sense of responsibility towards the community in the past and the close ties the church and the community used to enjoy. <em><strong>As the environment is changing (tangible change: taller buildings block the view from the top of the tower; intangible change: people are becoming more closed off and distant from others), has the church adjusted its community care ministry accordingly? <\/strong><\/em> The arrangement of that fridge in the caf\u00e9 shows that a simple gesture goes a long way in bringing people together. I could not help but think that it may be easier than it seems for the church to evangelize people in the community. The tour guide took the students into the streets and alleys of Yau Ma Tei to let us know about this old community that is facing reconstruction. We first came to Portland Street. There are many cross-border direct bus stops here, and next to it is a new hotel that stands tall among the surrounding old district facilities. The tour guide pointed out that the development of Hong Kong&#039;s tourism industry has led to the closure of many old-style shops. With the closure of small shops, the network of people has gradually become alienated, and the strong human touch of the old community is no longer seen. Later, we came to a church building with a tower on the roof of the church. It turns out that there were not so many high-rise buildings in the past. Standing on the top of the church tower, you can overlook the entire Yau Ma Tei. The pastors prayed for the community on the top of the tower. At that time, the relationship between the church and the neighbors was very close. Compared with the past, the relationship between the church and the community is alienated now. While we were thinking about the problem of alienated interpersonal relationships, we saw a coffee shop in Tak Cheong Lane. There was a refrigerator placed near the road. The refrigerator door was facing outwards and it was written &quot;Share with the people&quot;. This refrigerator itself not only provides help to those in need, but also becomes an open platform for other people to donate food and drinks. We came to the &quot;Life Factory&quot; on Hamilton Street. The handicrafts there are new and old. It turns out that most of the handicrafts come from closed shops. There is a consignment place here, so that those handicrafts can be re-appeared in the market, and it is hoped that this can more or less continue the old personal connections. This community tour made me rethink the gospel work in the community. The design of the rooftop tower churches shows the commitment of the church to the community in the past, and the close relationship between the two. However, the overall environment is changing (visible: taller buildings block the view of the tower top; invisible: the people in society are becoming more utilitarian and indifferent). Has the church changed in its community care ministry? From the layout design of the coffee shop refrigerator, we can see that a small action can bring people closer together. This makes me reflect that it is not as difficult as we imagine for the church to spread the gospel and reach the community.
