Down with Useless Theology! <\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000I completed my bachelor\u2019s degree in biblical studies at a bible college in the States in 2008 and have been pastoring ever since. During my studies, I took courses typically required for the bachelor\u2019s degree in theology (i.e. the \u201cfour pillars\u201d: biblical studies, church history, systematic theology, and practical theology). Biblical studies was the area that I took the most courses in. What was in my mind at that time was \u201cHail, biblical studies! Down with useless theology!\u201d Though I took three semesters of systematic theology, theology meant nothing more to me than empty discussions. I did not care much for the discipline when I graduated.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000And so, I became a pastor who cared only for biblical studies. From 2008 until 2012, the following questions were bothering me: What makes Christians special? How do we live out the Bible? Is systematic theology merely a set of tools to make sure believers do not turn to heresy? Does it have anything to do with the Christian life? All these questions confused me even more after the Express Rail Link controversy when many young people asked me about the relationship between the Church and society. Though I had read Stanley Hauerwas in my leisure time during my undergraduate studies and his conclusion (\u201cthe church being church\u201d) convinced me, I did not fully understand his theological ideas.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000On the whole, I was faced with two problems: (1) without the guidance of theology, I could only apply what I had learnt in general or principle terms, and my ethical view was human-centered; (2) while I had a growing appreciation for the uniqueness of the Church and Hauerwas\u2019 ideas, I was, without theological backing, torn between biblical studies and ethics as I could not find a way to bridge the gulf.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>The Turning Point of My Pastoring Life<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000A couple of years ago during the admission interview at HKBTS, I was a little unsure when the President told me, \u201cYou should have no problem with biblical studies considering your background, but there should be a lot for you to learn in theology.\u201d In 2012 when my first semester at HKBTS started with a biblical studies class, I was of course excited. In fact, biblical studies teachers at HKBTS helped me improve my methodology, but what really transformed me was the faith thinking class in spring 2013. No, you did not hear me wrong. The formidable faith thinking class at HKBTS was the turning point in my pastoring life. It enlightened me and solved all my previous problems. I came to understand the uniqueness of the Christian faith, and that when I looked for absolute certainty I was unknowingly influenced by Immanuel Kant. From then on, I fell in love with theology and worked even harder to overcome my weaknesses in pastoring.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The theology and ethics courses at HKBTS are arranged along the same lines as the book <em>Faith Thinking<\/em>, introducing me step-by-step to different aspects of the uniqueness of the Church under the Triune God. In this way, my pastoring life was gradually transformed and my spirituality nourished. In the Baptist Church history class, I learnt about the Baptist spirit of non-conformity; in the systematic theology class I came to understand that the doctrine of the Trinity, which is closely related to the Christian life, is the most practical doctrine; in the ethics class, I realized what I had held as Christian ethics was an ethics without God. I started getting rid of the idea of pastors\u2019 (especially my own) heroism. From Samuel Wells and Dietrich Bonhoeffer I learnt to recognize the riches of God\u2019s grace and the limits and sin of man. Through the two figures I realized my weaknesses as a pastor. These weaknesses include the emphasis on will power over the work of the Holy Spirit, teaching of sola fide without my pastoral work manifesting this teaching (lack of grace), manipulative love (being more controlling than God), etc.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000All these showed me that I am the one who most needs salvation and repentance when it comes to pastoring. All these changes helped me to understand God\u2019s love more and enabled me to live out His love. <em><strong>As I learnt to let God be God, I barely felt any signs of burnout. Only then did I truly realize that being a pastor is the best job in the world. <\/strong><\/em> My transformation is evident to my family and my brothers and sisters in Christ.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000HKBTS has saved my pastoring life. Theology is boring!&quot; Even after studying systematic theology for three semesters, my impression of theology was just a bunch of boring discussions. So when I graduated, I had a negative feeling about theology. In this way, I became a pastor who puts Bible studies first. From 2008 to 2012, these questions kept bothering me: What is so special about Christians? How do we live out the Bible? Is systematic theology a bunch of tools to ensure that &quot;believers do not become heretics&quot;? Is it relevant to the lives of believers? Especially after the &quot;high-speed rail incident&quot;, young people often asked me about the relationship between the church and society. All of this confused me. Although I read Stanley Hauerwas&#039;s works in my spare time during my bachelor&#039;s degree and agreed with his conclusion (&quot;Let the church be the church&quot;), I could never understand his theological thinking. In general, I faced two problems: First, without the guidance of theological thinking, my application was nothing more than principle\/universality, and my ethical views were also people-centered; second, I increasingly agreed with the particularity of the church and Hauerwas&#039;s thinking, but without the support of theology, the gap between biblical studies and ethics made me feel like I had a split personality, because I found that I could not cross this gap no matter what. The turning point of my pastoral career I still remember that I applied to &quot;HKTS&quot; a few years ago. During the interview, the dean said, &quot;With your background, Bible studies should not be difficult. But you should learn something about theology.&quot; I was half-believing and half-doubting at the time. Classes started in 2012, and the first class was the Bible course. Of course, I was very excited; in fact, the Bible teacher at HKTS helped me improve my methodology. But what changed me was the theological thinking course in the spring of 2013. Yes, the dreaded faith thinking at BTS was a turning point in my pastoral career. The theological thinking course opened up my &quot;Ren and Du meridians&quot;, and all my previous problems were solved. I understood the uniqueness of the Christian faith, how I was unconsciously influenced by Immanuel Kant, and my pursuit of 100% certainty. Since then, I have fallen in love with theology, and hope to make up for my shortcomings with hard work to fill the gap in pastoral work. The arrangement of the theology and ethics courses at BTS is also in line with the book Faith Thinking, which has enabled me to gradually deepen my understanding of the uniqueness of the church under the Triune God from different levels. As a result, my pastoral career and spirituality have slowly been changed and nourished. In the Baptist History course, I learned the Baptist spirit of not tolerating conformity; in the Systematic Theology course, I understood that the Trinity is the most Kant\uff09\u7684\u5f71\u97ff\u3001\u8ffd\u6c42\u767e\u5206\u767e\u7684\u78ba\u5b9a\u6027\u7b49\u3002\u81ea\u6b64\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u611b\u4e0a\u4e86\u795e\u5b78\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u5e0c\u671b\u5c07\u52e4\u88dc\u62d9\uff0c\u597d\u586b\u88dc\u7267\u990a\u7684\u7f3a\u53e3\u3002 \u3000\u3000\u300c\u6d78\u795e\u300d\u7684\u795e\u5b78\u79d1\u548c\u502b\u7406\u79d1\u7684\u7de8\u6392\uff0c\u4e5f\u548cFaith
