one-on-one faculty-student mentoring method was adopted in order to further nurture students\u2019 spiritual lives. This change has been of great significance to many. Thirty years ago, when I was a seminary student, the seminary nurtured students\u2019 spirituality through the Morning Chapel, the morning prayer meetings, and the evening prayer meetings. However, spiritual growth was largely considered to develop independently through one\u2019s personal relationship with God. When considering how students\u2019 spiritual growth is nurtured, the impact of the Morning Chapel and the prayer meetings is obvious. However, the Bible also shows that the master-disciple relationship is an important method for spiritual cultivation which can be seen through the relationship between Jesus and his twelve disciples, which is itself a mentor-student relationship. Spiritual cultivation through mentor-student relationships has a long and important history.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In 1998, I came back from the US to become a teacher at the Seminary. At that time, the small group mentoring method had already been adopted to help cultivate students\u2019 spirituality. Each individual teacher led a group of 10 to 15 students, and it was obvious that the benefits far exceeded that of the seminary meetings alone. This was a big step forward because this method confirmed that spiritual cultivation was part of the curriculum of theological education. However, small groups also have their limitations. For example, some of the problems inherent in spiritual growth are not necessarily suitable to be shared in a group setting. In addition, it is hard for a teacher to offer advice to students one-by-one when dealing with more than ten students at once.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In 2009, the Seminary took another big step forward by arranging that students receive spiritual cultivation through one-on-one faculty-student mentoring. Through this scheme, the challenge a teacher faces becomes even bigger. To be a spiritual mentor, our teachers not only have to dedicate more time, they also have to open their minds and hearts, and to let their lives influence the students\u2019 lives.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In the Seminary, all teachers, students, and staff comprise a disciple community, and together they learn to follow Jesus, and to be his disciples. The teacher is an essential catalyst who must take the first step. In a disciple community where everyone learns together, the teacher, being a catalyst, has to take the responsibility to lead students to grow and to nurture others who have nothing to be ashamed of in front of God.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000It is an important development in theological education for the Seminary that they have adopted this one-on-one faculty-student mentoring method for students\u2019 spiritual cultivation. Amongst all the curricula in HKBTS, spiritual cultivation uniquely takes the form of one-on-one relationships. This illustrates the commitment of the Seminary to the spiritual cultivation of students.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eric Kwong Associate Professor of Practical Theology (World Religion) Since the fall semester of 2009, the College has adopted a &quot;one-to-one mentoring system&quot; for the spiritual formation of students. This change is of great significance. Looking back thirty years ago, when I was a seminary student, the College mainly cultivated students&#039; spirituality through morning meetings, morning prayer meetings and evening prayer meetings, and spiritual growth was regarded as a personal relationship with God. There is no doubt that morning meetings and prayer meetings help spiritual formation. However, the Bible also shows that the mentor-disciple relationship is an important channel for spiritual formation, and the relationship between Jesus and the twelve disciples is a mentor-disciple relationship. In 1998, after returning to Hong Kong from the United States, I became a teacher at the College. At that time, the College had begun to use small groups to cultivate students&#039; spirituality. A teacher led a small group of ten to fifteen people. Of course, its effectiveness was far better than relying solely on the College&#039;s gatherings. This is a big step forward for the college in spiritual formation, because this system confirms that spiritual formation is part of the theological education curriculum. However, the group format still has its limitations. For example, some spiritual growth problems may not be suitable for detailed discussion in the group, and teachers face more than ten students and have little opportunity to give individual advice to students one by one. In 2009, the college took another big step forward and arranged for students to receive spiritual formation in a one-on-one mentoring way. Under this arrangement, the challenge faced by teachers has become greater. Because being a spiritual mentor not only requires more time, but also requires opening up one&#039;s own life and influencing lives with life. In the college, all teachers, students, and co-workers form a group of disciples, learning to follow Jesus and become His disciples together. Teachers are just seniors who have taken a step ahead in the spiritual journey. But in the group of disciples studying together, as senior teachers, they should also shoulder the responsibility of leading students to grow and cultivate more worthy workers for God. The one-on-one mentoring system is an important development in theological education of the School. Among all the courses of HKBS, only spiritual formation is taught in a one-on-one manner, which shows the importance the School places on spiritual formation.
