study of the Bible (Old or New Testaments) and theology than is possible in the M.Div. or B.Th. programs. In many schools in the States (e.g., my own) it is the first year of the doctoral program. At our seminary, too, we require Th.D. students to take Th.M. classes to strengthen their knowledge in specific areas. For this reason, Bible concentration students must be able to work comfortably with the Hebrew and\/or Greek texts. This is a problem for students who have been out of seminary for a while. My impression is that the language requirement is a major hurdle discouraging interested people from applying. To address this we have \u201creentry\u201d classes for Greek and Hebrew. Of course, if interested M.Div. students apply earlier this may solve the problem too. <\/p>\n<p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000One of the things I am most proud of is the fact that at least four of our Bible students have gone on to doctoral studies. One has even returned to help teach our courses. I believe our Bible program has the strength and depth needed to give students a solid foundation for whatever they wish to do with it upon graduation, whether for further studies or for ministry in the church. In line with our seminary\u2019s emphasis on cross disciplinary studies, it would be interesting to explore how biblical studies could contribute, for example, to the study of spirituality, worship, or pastoral ministry. Personally, I would like to see more of these kinds of collaborations in the future. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Wong Fook-kong Professor of Old Testament Our Master of Theology (MT) program is a program that allows students to study the Bible (Old or New Testament) and explore theology in a deeper level than is possible in a basic MDiv or BTh program. In many seminaries in the United States (including the one I attended), the MT program is equivalent to the first year of a PhD program. Baptist Theological Seminary has similar requirements. In order to make PhD students more solid in certain areas, we sometimes require them to take some MT courses on a case-by-case basis. For this reason, MT students majoring in Bible must be proficient in the original languages of the Bible (Hebrew and\/or Greek), which is something that students who have graduated and left school for a while are worried about. In my opinion, the language requirement has become a major obstacle that has held back these potential applicants. Later, in order to solve their problem, we introduced &quot;reentry&quot; classes to help students review Greek and Hebrew. Of course, if Master of Divinity students enroll early after graduation, this language requirement should not be a problem. One of the things I am most proud of is that at least four students who majored in Biblical Studies have continued to pursue doctoral programs. One of them has even returned to Hong Kong after completing his studies and is currently helping to teach some subjects at his alma mater. I believe that our Bible courses have the necessary strength and depth to help students lay a solid biblical foundation so that they can move forward after graduation - whether to continue their studies or serve in the church. Interdisciplinary research is a focus of the School. Looking forward to the future, we can explore how Biblical studies can contribute to the study of spiritual theology, worship or pastoral ministry, which will be meaningful. I personally look forward to seeing more collaborative results in this area in the future.
