The entire Hong Kong Baptist community has marched forward for quite a distance, which makes us pause to ask how must we continue on our march? How will we experience a future different from the past? Through the testimonies of the Bible as revealed in the book of Joshua, let us consider what is most crucial for the local Baptist community as we march forward.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Yahweh is Lord Forever<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In Joshua 3:3-4, Joshua gave orders to all the Israelites to follow the ark of the covenant so that \u201cyou will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.\u201d A man often likes to plan his course himself, just like the generation of Israelites who had walked through the Red Sea but later died in the desert. They died simply because they had their own way of figuring out the road ahead but then got lost. Now the second generation of Israelites crossed the Jordan River as the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth led their way (vv. 11, 14, 17). Yahweh is indeed the Lord of history. We must therefore take heed not to reverse the order and assume that Yahweh divided the Jordan River in order to tie in with the Israelites\u2019 plan to create their new history.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The end of the fifth chapter is a reminder: Yahweh is the Lord who belongs neither to the Israelites nor their enemies. Joshua obviously asked the wrong question: \u201cAre you for us or for our enemies?\u201d (5:13b) The commander of the Lord\u2019s army was quick to correct in unequivocal terms, \u201cNeither!\u201d He belonged to neither side but to the army of Yahweh, the one who has the power to rule over the history of all the earth. In all of the battles, God is not there to fit in what we have planned in advance, but on the contrary, we have to take part in His battle and come to realize His ideal plan. Therefore, we must first ask: what is the will of the Lord of all the earth and the Lord of history? What kind of Christian community life must our Baptist community live out?<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Commemorate and Preach\uff0eRenew the Covenant with God<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Crossing the Jordan River means forsaking the old and welcoming the new. God led the Israelites to cross the Jordan River on the tenth day of the first month, surpassing their ancestors\u2019 failure and disbelief. God ordered the Israelites to take up stones serving as a sign and to proclaim to their descendants this incident so that they would clearly understand \u201cthese stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever\u201d (4:7). The commemoration and preaching of God\u2019s power of deliverance needs to be the starting point of renewal of both the covenant between God and man and of our relationship with God. In the process of commemoration and preaching, we once again acknowledge the God of eternity is our Lord, and this God of great power walks before us, leading us to cross over from death to life. He is the one who still commands the Jordan River to stop flowing in our lives.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Besides piling up twelve stones as a memorial, the Israelites performed circumcision and observed the Passover. Circumcision marks not only a bodily symbol but also signifies the offering up of the whole person to Yahweh so that we can be a holy people of God. It signifies that we cut ourselves away from the sinful world to which our old selves belonged as we lead our new lives on earth. It is through circumcision and Passover observance that the Israelites would once again renew their relationship with God so that they could enter into a new chapter in history.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>The Whole Community Must Humble before God<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000What lessons can the Baptist community learn from Joshua chapter 3 to 5? First, the whole community must be humble before God. To be humble is to focus on God\u2019s leadership, seeking only His will. We ought to remind one another that we need to focus on the Bible and learn from the scriptures together, seeing only God and not ourselves. Only then can we walk on the right path. Second, living a life of humility requires a willingness to undergo a process of constantly letting go one\u2019s possessions under God\u2019s leadership so that we can constantly experience the work of God, a new life in Christ and a new era. Third, to be humble before God also involves a process of constantly renewing the covenant with God. The Baptist community needs to commemorate God\u2019s leadership and deliverance so as to constantly renew its covenant with God, being aware of their identity as God\u2019s people and acknowledging that only God can lead us to experience a life of constant renewal as we walk toward the future.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Andres Tang, Joshua 3:3-4, 4:19-24, 5:2-7. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary, and the Hong Kong Baptist Convention&#039;s Bible Study Conference is also in its 30th year. The Hong Kong Baptist community has come a long way. How should we continue on this path, and how should we experience a different history? Let us look at the biblical testimony, starting with the Book of Joshua, to see what is most important for the Baptist community as it moves forward. The Lord is always the Lord. In Joshua 3:3-4, Joshua commands all Israel to follow the Ark of the Covenant, &quot;so that you may know the way you should go, for you have never gone before in this way.&quot; People love to plan their own paths, just as the first generation of Israelites who died in the wilderness, though they crossed the Red Sea, lost their way because of their own calculations of the road ahead. When the second generation crossed the Jordan River, it was the Ark of the Covenant, the Lord of the earth, that led the way (verses 11, 14, 17). Jehovah is the Lord of history. We must not reverse our roles, thinking that Jehovah parted the Jordan River to facilitate the Israelites&#039; creation of a new history. The ending of Chapter 5 also reminds us: Jehovah is Lord; He does not belong to the Israelites or the enemy. Joshua&#039;s question was clearly misguided; the commander of Jehovah&#039;s army categorically corrected him: &quot;No!&quot; He belongs to neither side, but to Jehovah&#039;s army, the force that dominates the history of the whole earth. In all battles, it is not God who fulfills our pre-set ideals and participates in our battles, but we who participate in God&#039;s battles and realize His ideals. Therefore, we must first ask: What is the will of the Lord of the earth, the Lord of history? How does God want the Baptist community to live the life that a Christian community should have? Remembering and preaching the renewed covenant of crossing the Jordan River signifies abandoning the old and welcoming the new. On the tenth day of the first month, God led the Israelites across the Jordan River, overcoming the failures and unbelief of their ancestors. God commanded the Israelites to erect stones as a memorial and to tell their descendants about this event, so that future generations would understand that &quot;these stones shall be a lasting remembrance of the Israelites&quot; (Joshua 4:7). Remembering and proclaiming God&#039;s saving power is the starting point for renewing the covenant and our relationship with God. In remembering and proclaiming, we reaffirm that the eternal God is our Lord, that this mighty God goes before us, bringing us from death to life, and stopping the Jordan River in our lives from flowing away. Besides erecting stones as a memorial, the Israelites also practiced circumcision and observed Passover. Circumcision is not only a physical mark but also a symbol of belonging to the Lord, becoming a holy people, and separating oneself from the sinful world of the old self. Through circumcision and Passover, they renewed their relationship with God and entered a new chapter in history. What reminders does Joshua chapter 3-5 offer to the Baptist community? First, the entire community must be humble. Humility means focusing on God&#039;s guidance and seeking His will. We need to remind one another to focus and learn together before the Bible, seeing only God and not ourselves, so that we may walk on the right path. Second, a humble life is one of being willing to constantly give up under God&#039;s guidance, thereby continuously experiencing God&#039;s new works, new life, and new \u3000\u3000\u9664\u4e86\u7acb\u77f3\u70ba\u8a18\uff0c\u4ee5\u8272\u5217\u4eba\u9084\u65bd\u884c\u5272\u79ae\u548c\u5b88\u903e\u8d8a\u7bc0\u3002\u5272\u79ae\u4e0d\u50c5\u662f\u8089\u8eab\u7684\u6a19\u8a18\uff0c\u66f4\u8868\u5fb5\u5168\u4eba\u6b78\u5c6c\u8036\u548c\u83ef\uff0c\u4f5c\u8056\u6f54\u7684\u5b50\u6c11\uff0c\u884c\u4e8b\u70ba\u4eba\u8981\u5f9e\u8001\u6211\u7684\u7f6a\u60e1\u4e16\u754c\u5272\u96e2\u51fa\u4f86\u3002\u900f\u904e\u5272\u79ae\u548c\u5b88\u903e\u8d8a\u7bc0\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u518d\u6b21\u66f4\u65b0\u8207\u795e\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u9032\u5165\u6b77\u53f2\u7684\u65b0\u9801\u3002 \u6574\u500b\u7fa4\u9ad4\u8981\u8b19\u5351
