With the denomination being the largest in Hong Kong, we have a lot to be thankful for. Yet, this is a great time to reflect on God&#8217;s will when we may be on the cusp of something great. Joshua 6-8 provides the foundation for our reflection.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>The Fall of Jericho<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The preparation for the invasion of Jericho is telling in that Joshua 5:13-15 invites us to compare the preparation of this event with Exodus 3:5 where YHWH asked Moses to take off his shoes. Joshua was the new generation\u2019s leader, although he was no longer a young person. Just like Moses&#8217; generation, Joshua now faced a new era with new possibilities. Before the battle could ensue, he had to go through a similar process as Moses. In this process, God called for him to reenact the drama of Moses. Why? It is to show that YHWH was the same God even though His people were a different generation living in a different time and place. Every generation needs to walk the same path of obedience and faith. We notice that Joshua 6:2-8 shows the Israelites a time of obedience, thus leading to victory. Yet, this victory takes on a peculiar form. The Israelites were using the seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread to walk around Jericho. In other words, YHWH wanted His people to remember His salvation more than He wanted them to fight physically. We can see the priority of God&#8217;s heart as he directed this generation.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Failure of Ai<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The initial preparation for Ai pales in comparison to Joshua 5-6. There was no inquiry of the Lord. There was no self-purification. Instead, the spies came back giving a glowing report predicting an easy victory. The Israelites in this situation only had a maximum of 3000 soldiers at the time of the invasion of Ai. There was a quick defeat. This shows that confidence and even faith in our own ability is not enough. The culprit here was Achan who greedily took loot from Ai. In comparison to the nobody, Rahab, at the end of Joshua 6, Achan was a somebody whose lineage was easily traceable, as evident in Joshua 7:1 and one who had the large part in the drawing lots within his tribe. This shows that background was not enough. We may ask why God ultimately killed Achan&#8217;s family. There is no certain answer. But if we were to answer such a question, then we must equally attempt to explain why God saved Rahab&#8217;s family. The fact is, God&#8217;s mercy may be wide, but His justice is equally swift, especially against those who should have known better. This serves as a warning to us today.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Victory at Ai<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The victory at Ai this time involved the entire army directed by the word of God as we see in Joshua 8:1. Once again, in contrast to the failure, we see a picture closer to that of Jericho as people purified themselves the sin from their midst, involved everyone in the fight and most importantly, listened to God&#8217;s call. In the end, we may notice that God did allow the Israelites to bring back some of the loot in Joshua 8:2, 27. The fact is, God is not a cosmic killjoy, but he does want his people to put his interest first above their own. Joshua had learned an important lesson this time. He went to Mount Gerezim and Ebal, some 25 miles out of the way to renew their covenant with God, because this time, Joshua knew he should not be in a hurry for success. Sometimes, success can be the mother of failure when the people of God fail to pause and reflect on what God has done in their lives. God&#8217;s people must always serve God&#8217;s interest first.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Sam Tsang, Joshua 6-8: The Hong Kong Baptist Church has been providing theological education for sixty years, a truly commendable achievement. As the largest denomination in Hong Kong, we should give thanks to God for many things. However, at this seemingly high juncture, it is time to reflect on God&#039;s will for us. Joshua chapters 6-8 provide a foundation for this reflection. The Battle of Jericho: Joshua 5:13-15 records the preparations before the attack on Jericho, including the command of the Lord&#039;s army to Joshua to remove his sandals. This reminds us of the event in Exodus 3:5 where God commanded Moses to remove his sandals. Joshua is a new generation of leaders, though no longer young. Like Moses&#039; generation, Joshua now faces a new era and new opportunities. Before leading his army to attack the city, Joshua must go through the process Moses went through. In this process, God requires Joshua to repeat the scene of Moses removing his sandals. Why? This demonstrates that Jehovah is the same God, even though His people are in a different time and generation. Every generation of Israelites must walk the same path of obedience and faith. As seen in chapter 6:2-8, the Israelites&#039; victory was in sight because of their obedience to God. However, this victory depended on a specific method: during the seven-day festival of Unleavened Bread, the Israelites were required to circle Jericho daily. In other words, God wanted His people to remember His salvation more than to go to war. This reveals God&#039;s intention for this generation of Israelites, understanding what He considers paramount. The preparations before the attack on Ai, as recorded in chapter 7, contrast with those in chapters 5 and 6. This time, they did not consult God or purify themselves; instead, spies returned boasting that Ai could be easily captured. Thus, the Israelites sent only three thousand men into battle, resulting in a swift defeat. This illustrates that relying solely on one&#039;s own abilities is insufficient. The culprit in this defeat was Achan, who, out of greed, took what was due to be destroyed. Unlike Rahab, who had no official status (at the end of chapter 6), Achan was no ordinary man. As seen in chapter 7:1, he came from the powerful tribe of Judah, and the author of Joshua devotes so much space to describing the lotteries to show that Achan was a man of high standing. This demonstrates that one&#039;s background is not the sole determinant of success or failure. We might ask: Why did God ultimately kill Achan&#039;s family? There is no definitive answer. But if we are to ask this question, we must also ask: Why did God save Rahab&#039;s family? Indeed, God&#039;s love is boundless, but His severe judgment will also come swiftly\u2014especially to those who knowingly commit transgressions. This is God&#039;s warning to us. The victory at Ai: This time, the capture of Ai was due to God&#039;s word guiding the entire Israelite army (8:1). Unlike the previous disastrous defeat, this time we see a picture similar to the siege of Jericho: the entire nation of Israel was cleansed, the soldiers were purified of sin, and most importantly, the people obeyed God&#039;s commands. Finally, we see that God allowed the Israelites to seize the city&#039;s possessions and livestock (8:2, 27). In fact, God doesn&#039;t like to disappoint people, but He does require His people to value His will more than their own interests.
