Together with other faculty members, I have made a great effort to develop <em>Hill Road<\/em> into an academic journal that seeks to introduce important issues in the academic world to the Chinese churches. We want to encourage pastors and ministers to reflect upon the Christian faith when facing various ideologies and the present reality.\u201d<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Furthermore, the faculty is encouraged to do academic research, and in these two years we have established an academic forum to enable our faculty members to present their research findings and foster the exchange of ideas between faculty and students. Meanwhile, we want to emphasize theology and especially biblical teaching. It is our hope that students will be trained to appropriate scripture and exercise scriptural reasoning so that later in their ministries, when they are faced with different situations, they can reason and make good judgments based on scripture. A minister cannot survive without vision, and vision must come from the Word of God!\u201d<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Professor Cho goes on to point out that Baptists are called \u201cBible people.\u201d Even though the term may have both positive and negative connotations, it definitely indicates that the Bible is the foundation of the Baptist churches. He also holds that seminaries must be deeply rooted in the Bible and that the Bible must be central to the development of contextual theological education. This is an important note because it is possible that theology students may be well versed in the thoughts of eminent theologians while lacking a sufficient Biblical understanding. Unfortunately, seminarians can have a good grasp of the application of counseling, leadership principles, religious education and psychology, while lacking the essential components of scripture.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In the past few years, the seminary has stepped up its biblical teaching, and we are beginning to see some encouraging results. Professor Cho emphasized that the seminary will continue in this direction while at the same time focusing on the nurture of students\u2019 character.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u201cTheological education stressed the practical. A minister trained in a seminary should be able to preach the Word of God. At the same time, a minister should always strive to live and act according to scriptural principles, since the character of a minister affects the way he or she prepares and preaches a sermon. The character of a minister also affects whether or not God is able to use the message he or she preaches to bless Christian brothers and sisters with God\u2019s grace and help. A minister\u2019s character certainly influences the congregation among whom he or she ministers and counsels, and affects his or her leadership and administrative management.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u201cCharacter affects the kind of a leader a minister will become. For example, in the course of making decisions at a church, a minister must act humbly toward the parishioners to be able to hear views and ideas from every corner. The minister must also be humble before God so that he can discern the will of God and not substitute human desires for God\u2019s will. Patience is also important, meaning that the minister must not be impetuous but remains patient in all circumstances: be patient to allow brothers and sisters to grow in their understanding and to wait patiently for the appropriate time. Moreover, around the conference table, it is not only important to listen with humility, but also to listen with kindness and openness. Besides, a minister needs to nurture a heart of peace based on an attitude of humility and patience. A man or woman of humility and patience is also a man of peace. Such a person is willing to wait for God\u2019s guidance and will not resort to extremes in words and deeds when opinions vary greatly. This is not to say that the minister does not have strong conviction. When applying the Word of God to guide brothers and sisters and abiding by scriptural principles, the minister will assume a definite stance.\u201d<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Professor Cho holds that when theological studies are conducted in ways that neglect the formation of character, they become hollow and lifeless. However, he does not mean that we should merely focus on the heart without making reference to various contemporary theories and tools. The seminary will continue to organize pastoral counseling, leadership and education seminars and international conferences, but the Word of God and the Christian faith must always play a key role. This is what makes seminary education distinct from secular forms of study.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Dr. Cho explains that character in students can be developed and refined when they engage in getting along with people they encounter in their daily lives, when they take part in worship service or read the Word of God; when they learn to serve God and man in ministry during their church practicum and when they involve themselves in an ongoing process of self-examination and self-discipline. Weaknesses in a person\u2019s character and difficulties in interpersonal relationship are often deep-rooted problems that cannot be solved simply by one\u2019s willpower. The minister must develop a healthy prayer life to deal with these personal and interpersonal problems. To this end, a teacher should guide students to come closer to God through prayer, allowing the Holy Spirit to indwell in their lives as they strive to build up the character of a worthy minister.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Dr. Cho says, \u201cThe nurturing of the student\u2019s character also implies the need to nurture the teacher\u2019s character, since the life example of the teacher is decisive in the success or failure of the educational process. This is not to say that any single teacher can develop a perfect character. As humans we all have weaknesses and deficiencies. Nevertheless, we pray that God will not only help, heal and build up each student but that He will do the same in each teacher as well. We need to have a team of teachers who have the heart, the determination and the power from God to teach and nurture our students effectively. The seminary will continue to recruit teachers who fit our special profile to join our faculty team. This is one of the most important tasks we set out to achieve.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Finally, Dr. Cho remarks, \u201cEmphasis on biblical teaching and character formation may seem platitudinous. But as a pastor, a theologian, a theological educator, I firmly believe these two aspects are crucial and closely related to the life of a minister. I pray that God will continue to grant us wisdom to take responsibility to develop relevant theological education for the future. Preachers must not lack insight, and insight comes from the Word of God!&quot; Professor Cao also pointed out that Baptist believers are called &quot;Bible people&quot;. Even though this name contains both positive and negative meanings, the Bible is indeed the foundation of the Baptist Church. He also believes that any theological seminary needs to be rooted in the Word of God, and that emphasizing the use of the Bible is a warning and reminder for the development of contemporary theological education in Hong Kong. Because those who study theology may have a good understanding of the theories of some famous scholars, but their use of the Bible is very poor; they may have a good grasp of the application of counseling, leadership, religious education, and psychology, but their skills may lack nourishment from the Bible.   Over the past few years, the college has attempted to gradually strengthen biblical teaching and has begun to achieve some results in this regard. Professor Cao emphasized that this will be the direction that Baptist Theological Seminary will continue to work towards, and another important teaching direction ahead is the cultivation of character.   &quot;Theological education emphasizes practicality. Preachers trained in seminaries should know how to preach the Word of God and integrate knowledge and practice. The preacher&#039;s character affects how he prepares and preaches a sermon, and whether the message he preaches can be used by God, so that brothers and sisters can receive God&#039;s grace and help. Character certainly affects the preacher&#039;s pastoral care and counseling of believers, and also affects his leadership and administrative management.&quot; &quot;Character is enough to influence what kind of leader a preacher will become. For example, in the decision-making of the church, the preacher must be humble toward people in order to listen to opinions from all sides; he must be humble toward God in order to obey God&#039;s will in all things and not replace God&#039;s will with human will. Patience is also very important. Preachers must not be impatient, and they need to be patient in many things: they must be patient with the growth pace of their brothers and sisters, they must be patient in waiting for some appropriate times, and at the conference table, they must not only listen humbly, but also be patient and \u3000\u3000\u300c\u795e\u5b78\u6559\u80b2\u8457\u91cd\u5be6\u8e10\u6027\u3002\u795e\u5b78\u9662\u6240\u8a13\u7df4\u7684\u50b3\u9053\u8005\u61c9\u61c2\u5f97\u50b3\u8b1b\u795e\u7684\u9053\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u77e5\u884c\u5408\u4e00\u3002\u50b3\u9053\u8005\u7684\u54c1\u683c\u5f71\u97ff\u4ed6\u5982\u4f55\u9810\u5099\u548c\u5ba3\u8b1b\u4e00\u7bc7\u9053\uff0c\u5f71\u97ff\u4ed6\u6240\u50b3\u8b1b\u7684\u4fe1\u606f\u80fd\u5426\u88ab\u795e\u4f7f\u7528\uff0c\u4ee5\u81f4\u5f1f\u5144\u59ca\u59b9\u5f97\u8457\u795e\u7684\u6069\u60e0\u548c\u5e6b\u52a9\u3002\u54c1\u683c\u56fa\u7136\u5f71\u97ff\u50b3\u9053\u8005\u5c0d\u4fe1\u5f92\u7684\u7267\u990a\u8207\u8f14\u5c0e\uff0c\u4e5f\u5f71\u97ff\u4ed6\u7684\u9818\u5c0e\u5de5\u4f5c\u548c\u884c\u653f\u7ba1\u7406\u3002\u300d
