font-size: 24px;\"><strong>\u5f15\u8a00<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u7531\u897f\u65b9\u5b78\u8005\u6240\u4e3b\u5c0e\u7684\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7814\u7a76\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u602a\u73fe\u8c61\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u5ffd\u7565\u4e86\u66f8\u5167\u5169\u500b\u52f8\u52c9\uff1a\u5341\u56db\u7ae01\u7bc0\u548c\u5341\u4e94\u7ae07\u7bc0\u63d0\u5230\u7684\u5f7c\u6b64\u300c\u63a5\u7d0d\u300d\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u5728\u5341\u516d\u7ae0\u91cd\u8907\u4e86\u4e8c\u5341\u4e00\u6b21\u7684\u300c\u554f\u67d0\u67d0\u5b89\u300d\u3002\u6709\u95dc\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u8457\u8ff0\u96d6\u6c57\u725b\u5145\u68df\uff0c\u537b\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u7bc7\u6587\u7ae0\u662f\u4ee5\u9019\u4e9b\u52f8\u52c9\u70ba\u984c\u7684\u3002\u5341\u516d\u7ae016\u7bc0\u63d0\u5230\u7684\u300c\u8056\u6f54\u7684\u89aa\u5634\u300d\u96d6\u8f03\u53d7\u6ce8\u610f\uff0c<sup>1<\/sup> \u81f3\u4eca\u537b\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u7bc7\u5c08\u6587\u89e3\u91cb\u5b83\u5728\u6559\u6703\u7684\u8655\u5883\u6216\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u8ad6\u8b49\u4e2d\u6709\u4f55\u4f5c\u7528\u3002\u90a3\u4e9b\u95e1\u91cb\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u6240\u8ad6\u7684\u69ae\u8fb1\u5c0a\u5351\u7684\u5c08\u6587\uff0c\u4e26\u6c92\u6709\u63d0\u5230\u300c\u63a5\u7d0d\u5ba2\u4eba\u300d\u9019\u52f8\u52c9\u5728\u7576\u4ee3\u793e\u6703\u7684\u610f\u6db5\u3002<sup>2<\/sup><\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u9019\u5169\u500b\u52f8\u52c9\u69cb\u6210\u4e86\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u9ad8\u6f6e\uff0c\u5176\u91cd\u8981\u6027\u662f\u4e0d\u5bb9\u7f6e\u7591\u7684\u3002\u4f46\u89e3\u7d93\u5bb6\u537b\u7f3a\u5c11\u4e86\u795e\u5b78\u548c\u793e\u6703\u5b78\u7684\u89f8\u89ba\uff0c\u4e0d\u660e\u767d\u9019\u4e9b\u7d93\u6587\u6240\u8a0e\u8ad6\u7684\u662f\u751a\u9ebc\u3002\u81ea\u5967\u53e4\u65af\u4e01\uff08Augustine\uff09\u4ee5\u4f86\uff0c\u4eba\u5011\u4e00\u76f4\u4ee5\u7f6a\u548c\u7f6a\u5f97\u8d66\u514d\u9019\u5169\u500b\u8b70\u984c\u4f5c\u70ba\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u795e\u5b78\u8ad6\u9ede\uff0c\u9019\u7a2e\u5148\u5165\u70ba\u4e3b\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\uff0c\u4f7f\u5f97\u6211\u5011\u7684\u795e\u5b78\u50b3\u7d71\u5ffd\u7565\u4e86\u9019\u66f8\u4fe1\u4e2d\u90a3\u986f\u8457\u7684\u793e\u6703\u8b70\u984c\uff1a\u6392\u65a5\u5351\u4e0b\uff08shameful exclusion\uff09\u548c\u63a5\u7d0d\u5c0a\u8cb4\uff08honorable welcome\uff09\u3002\u5230\u5e95\u9019\u4e9b\u4e3b\u984c\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u8ad6\u8b49\u4e2d\u8d77\u8457\u751a\u9ebc\u4f5c\u7528\uff1f\u5728\u4fdd\u7f85\u60f3\u8981\u91dd\u5c0d\u7684\u8655\u5883\u4e2d\uff0c\u5b83\u5011\u8207\u793e\u6703\u53ca\u795e\u5b78\u6709\u751a\u9ebc\u95dc\u806f\uff1f\u9019\u88e1\u6709\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u57fa\u790e\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u5728\u4e8c\u5341\u4e00\u4e16\u7d00\u767c\u5c55\u4e00\u7a2e\u5f7c\u6b64\u63a5\u7d0d\u3001\u5f7c\u6b64\u5c0a\u91cd\u7684\u65b0\u502b\u7406\uff1f\u4ee5\u4e0b\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u5148\u770b\u770b\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7b2c\u4e00\u7ae0\u5982\u4f55\u8ad6\u8ff0\u5c0a\u8cb4\u8207\u5351\u4e0b\u3002<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>1. \u6452\u9664\u5c0a\u5351\u4e4b\u5206\u7684\u8a0e\u8ad6<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u6731\u5947\uff08E. A. Judge\uff09\u6307\u51fa\uff0c\u5728\u53e4\u4ee3\u4e16\u754c\uff0c\u4eba\u5011\u6bcf\u6bcf\u628a\u8cfa\u53d6\u5c0a\u69ae\u770b\u6210\u4eba\u751f\u552f\u4e00\u7684\u76ee\u6a19\uff0c\u4fdd\u7f85\u5247\u8a66\u5716\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u88e1\u628a\u9019\u500b\u666e\u904d\u7684\u50b3\u7d71\u626d\u8f49\u904e\u4f86\u3002\u300c\u4eba\u5011\u8a8d\u70ba\u5c0d\u5728\u516c\u8077\u4e0a\u6709\u5efa\u6a39\u7684\u4eba\u800c\u8a00\uff0c\u8d0f\u5f97\u5c0a\u69ae\u662f\u6700\u597d\u7684\u5831\u916c\u3002\u300d<sup>3<\/sup> \u9019\u898b\u89e3\u5728\u862d\u9813\uff08J. E. Lendon\uff09\u7684\u66f8\u300a\u69ae\u8000\u7684\u5e1d\u570b\u300b\uff08<em>Empire of Honour<\/em>\uff09\u5f97\u5230\u5370\u8b49\uff0c\u4ed6\u9019\u6a23\u63cf\u8ff0\u7f85\u99ac\u5e1d\u570b\u90a3\u4e9b\u4e0a\u6d41\u793e\u6703\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\uff1a<\/p><blockquote><p>\u7576\u4e00\u500b\u5730\u4f4d\u986f\u8d6b\u7684\u8cb4\u65cf\u4fef\u8996\u5728\u4ed6\u4ee5\u4e0b\u7684\u793e\u6703\uff0c\u6709\u4e00\u5ea6\u9580\u6abb\u5728\u90a3\u88e1\uff0c\u5728\u9019\u9580\u6abb\u4e4b\u4e0b\uff0c\u7167\u4ed6\u7684\u60f3\u6cd5\uff0c\u5c0a\u69ae\u662f\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u7684\uff1b\u8a31\u8a31\u591a\u591a\u7684\u4eba\u90fd\u6c92\u6709\u5c0a\u69ae\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u6700\u597d\u7dad\u6301\u90a3\u72c0\u6cc1\u2026\u2026\u5974\u96b8\u6b63\u662f\u9019\u985e\u4eba\u7684\u5178\u578b\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u6c92\u5c0a\u69ae\u53ef\u8a00\u3002<sup>4<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u53d7\u773e\u5927\u90e8\u5206\u5c0d\u5c0a\u69ae\u7121\u6240\u6307\u671b\u3002\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u793e\u6703\u7684\u968e\u7d1a\u88e1\uff0c\u65e9\u671f\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u591a\u662f\u5974\u96b8\u6216\u4f5c\u904e\u5974\u96b8\u7684\uff0c\u751f\u4f86\u5c31\u56e0\u70ba\u4eba\u7684\u504f\u898b\u88ab\u8cb6\u4f4e\u3002\u65b0\u7d04\u6709\u95dc shame \u7684\u7528\u8a5e\u5305\u62ec\u4e86\u53ef\u6065\u7684\u884c\u70ba\uff0c\u4ee5\u53ca\u52a0\u8af8\u5225\u4eba\u8eab\u4e0a\u7684\u5351\u4e0b\u5730\u4f4d\uff0c<sup>5<\/sup> \u800c\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u6700\u70ba\u7a81\u51fa\u7684\u662f\u5f8c\u8005\u3002\u4e8b\u5be6\u4e0a\uff0c\u6700\u5177\u7834\u58de\u529b\u7684\u6065\u8fb1\u5c31\u662f\u9019\u4e00\u7a2e\uff0c\u5373\u5167\u5316\u4e86\u9019\u504f\u898b\uff1a\u8a8d\u5b9a\u67d0\u4e9b\u4eba\u6216\u67d0\u4e9b\u7fa4\u9ad4\u662f\u6beb\u7121\u50f9\u503c\u7684\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u751f\u547d\u7121\u95dc\u91cd\u8981\u3002<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000\u83ab\u8332\u5c3c\u65af\uff08Halvor Moxnes\uff09\u5728\u3008\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u5c0a\u8cb4\u8207\u7fa9\u3009\uff08\u201cHonour and Righteousness in Romans\u201d\uff09\u4e00\u6587\u4e2d\uff0c\u5f9e\u53e4\u4ee3\u793e\u6703\u90a3\u7a2e\u770b\u91cd\u5c0a\u69ae\u7684\u6587\u5316\u80cc\u666f\u4f86\u63a2\u8a0e\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u8981\u65e8\u3002\u5728\u9019\u793e\u6703\u88e1\uff0c\u300c\u5225\u4eba\u7684\u8a8d\u53ef\u548c\u80af\u5b9a\u300d\u662f\u5f88\u91cd\u8981\u7684\uff0c\u4e14\u610f\u5473\u8457\u300c\u7fa4\u9ad4\u6bd4\u500b\u4eba\u66f4\u91cd\u8981\u300d\u3002<sup>6<\/sup> \u9019\u8ddf\u897f\u65b9\u795e\u5b78\u7684\u4e3b\u8981\u95dc\u6ce8\u548c\u5c0d\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u8a6e\u91cb\u6709\u6240\u4e0d\u540c\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5f8c\u8005\u7684\u95dc\u6ce8\u548c\u8a6e\u91cb\u300c\u662f\u4ee5\u7f6a\u548c\u7f6a\u759a\u70ba\u4e3b\u5c0e\uff0c\u9019\u7f6a\u548c\u7f6a\u759a\u662f\u72af\u932f\u5f8c\u7684\u53cd\u61c9\u300d\u3002<sup>7<\/sup> \u83ab\u8332\u5c3c\u65af\u767c\u89ba\u5c0a\u69ae\u548c\u6065\u8fb1 \/ \u5351\u4e0b\u7684\u8a5e\u8a9e\u7d44\uff08word fields\uff09\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u4e2d\u626e\u6f14\u8457\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u89d2\u8272\uff0c\u5373\u5c0a\u91cd\u3001\u7f9e\u8fb1\u3001\u4e0d\u77e5\u7f9e\u6065\u3001\u7f9e\u6127\u7684\u3001\u4f7f\u4e1f\u81c9\u3001\u5149\u69ae\u3001\u69ae\u8000\u3001\u8b9a\u8cde\u3001\u8a87\u53e3\u548c\u8a87\u8000\u7b49\uff0c\u5728\u4fdd\u7f85\u7684\u8ad6\u8b49\u88e1\u751a\u70ba\u91cd\u8981\u3002\u83ab\u8332\u5c3c\u65af\u6307\u51fa\uff0c\u5c0a\u8cb4\u548c\u5351\u4e0b\u9019\u7126\u9ede\u8207\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u7684\u5b97\u65e8\u6709\u95dc\u2014\u2014\u300c\u628a\u4fe1\u4e3b\u7684\u7336\u592a\u4eba\u548c\u975e\u7336\u592a\u4eba\u9023\u6210\u4e00\u9ad4\u300d\u3002<sup>8<\/sup> \u9019\u610f\u5473\u61c9\u53bb\u9664\u300c\u6392\u65a5\u5351\u4e0b\u300d\u7684\u505a\u6cd5\uff0c\u800c\u90a3\u662f\u4e0d\u80fd\u9760\u7f6a\u5f97\u8d66\u514d\u5c31\u80fd\u9054\u5230\u7684\u3002\u9019\u8207\u7f6a\u548c\u8d66\u7f6a\u5728\u7f85\u99ac\u66f8\u50c5\u70ba\u6b21\u8981\u8b70\u984c\u6709\u95dc\u3002<\/p><p Dr. Chow Siu-chun was the respondent. Dr. Jewett claimed Roman\u2019s main theme is the overcoming of shameful status and pointed out that this same issue often lies behind the many conflicts of the 21st century. We are indeed privileged that Dr. Jewett has granted HKBTS\u2019s <em>English Newsletter <\/em>permission to publish his manuscript in this issue. <\/span><\/p><p><b>Scripture: 1:1-17, 14:1-16:16<\/b><\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000One of the oddities of Romans research, dominated thus far by western scholars, is the lack of interest in the twofold admonition to \u201cwelcome\u201d each other in Rom 14:1 and 15:7 and the twenty-one repetitions of the formula \u201cgreet so and so\u201d in chapter 16. In the vast scholarly literature on Romans, there is not a single article devoted to either of these terms. The reference in 16:16 to the \u201choly kiss\u201d has attracted more attention,<sup>1<\/sup> but no study has thus far explained its function in the congregational situation or the argument of the letter. In the studies written on the dialectic between honor and shame in Romans, there is no mention of the social function of honoring guests implicit in these references.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000Given the fact that these admonitions form the climax of the letter, their significance is indisputable. Yet commentators have lacked the theological and social sensitivity to understand what was at stake in these prominent references. The preoccupation with issues of guilt and forgiveness, which has dominated the theology of Romans since Augustine\u2019s time, has rendered our theological tradition oddly uninterested in the pervasive social issues of shameful exclusion and honorable welcome. What is the function of these themes in the argument of the Paul\u2019s letter? What is their social and theological relevance in the situation Paul is attempting to address in Romans? Is there a basis here to develop a new ethic of honorable welcome in the 21st century? We begin the quest with a consideration of the language of honor and shame in the opening chapter of the letter.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>I. Overcoming shameful status in the argument of Romans<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000E. A. Judge helps us understand that Paul in Romans is reversing a broad cultural tradition in the ancient world that viewed the earning of honor as the only suitable goal for life. \u201cIt was held that the winning of honor was the only adequate reward for merit in public life. \u201d<sup>3<\/sup> This insight was confirmed by <em>Empire of Honor<\/em>, in which J. E. Lendon describes the views of the upper class in the Roman Empire:<\/p><blockquote><p>When a great aristocrat peered down into society beneath him, there was a threshold beneath which, to his mind, honor did not exist; there were people, a great many people, without honor, and best kept that way&#8230;. The slave is the archetype of the man without honor.<sup>4<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote><p>\u00a0<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">Most of the audience of Romans consisted of persons with no prospects of gaining such glory. In the hierarchical context of Roman society, the early Christians were mostly slaves and former slaves who were demeaned from birth on prejudicial grounds. The rhetoric of shame in New Testament usage includes both shameful deeds and shameful status imposed by others.<sup>5<\/sup> It is the second type of shame that surfaces most prominently in this letter. In fact the most damaging form of shame is this second type, namely to internalize prejudicial assessments that persons or groups are worthless, that their lives are without significance.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In \u201cHonor and Righteousness in Romans,\u201d Halvor Moxnes places the argument of the letter in the ancient cultural context of an \u201chonor society\u201d in which \u201crecognition and approval from others\u201d is central, which means that the \u201cgroup is more important than the individual.\u201d<sup>6<\/sup> This contrasts with the dominant concern of Western theology and interpretation of Romans, \u201cin which guilt and guilt-feeling predominate as a response to wrongdoing.\u201d<sup>7<\/sup> He notes that the word fields of honor and shame play important roles in the argument of Romans, with references to \u201chonor, dishonor, shameless, be ashamed, put to shame, glory, glorify, praise, boast and boasting\u201d playing decisive roles in Paul\u2019s argument. This focus on honor and shame relates to the central purpose of the letter as Moxnes understands it, \u201cto bring together believing Jews and non-Jews in one community.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup> This means that shameful exclusion should be overcome, and that cannot be accomplished by forgiveness. This relates to the fact that guilt and forgiveness are decidedly secondary issues in Romans.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000To these references, I would add the socially discriminatory categories that Moxnes overlooked such as<\/p><ul><li>\u201cGreeks and barbarians, educated and uneducated\u201d in 1:14;<\/li><li>The 28 appearances of the potentially shameful epithet \u201cGentiles\u201d;<\/li><li>The categories \u201cweak\u201d and \u201cstrong\u201d employed in 14:1-15:7;<\/li><li>The 25 references to social gestures of honor in the form of \u201cwelcome\u201d and \u201cgreeting\u201d that dominate the last three chapters;<\/li><li>And the 70 references to \u201crighteousness,\u201d \u201cmake righteous,\u201d etc. that are often mistranslated as \u201cjustification.\u201d<\/li><\/ul><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000When compared with the single allusion to the \u201cpassing over previously committed sins\u201d in Rom 3:25, it is clear that a mainstream has been confused for a minor current in the tradition of interpreting Romans. Therefore, in place of the traditional theology of Romans that concentrates on individual guilt and forgiveness for failing to live up to the law, I propose that the central issue is setting the world right by overcoming its perverse systems of honor and shame through conformity to various forms of law.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000This allows Paul\u2019s letter to have a fresh relevance for the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. Although it was relevant in previous centuries to stress forgiveness because most people in the West feared the fires of hell because they were not living up to the law, forgiveness is less relevant for most societies today. Most people living in Europe and North America no longer feel bound by the law, and the societies in Africa and Asia lack the tradition of biblical rules. The most significant conflicts in our time come from shame in the form of social discrimination. Muslims who dominate the news in this \u201cera of Jihad\u201d resent their domination by others; they feel discriminated against, and in fact the aggressive policies of the west, currently led by the United States, are an expression of the feeling of superiority. Other nations that have suffered from various forms of imperialism act out of resentment against their former masters, which makes peaceful international relations difficult to maintain. Paul\u2019s argument has great relevance in this contemporary situation, because Rom 1-3 says that none is superior, that all nations have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In face of claims that some group earns God\u2019s blessings because of its alleged virtues, Rom 3-6, 9-11 says all people can be saved by grace alone. We need to reformulate the classical Reformation doctrine of \u201cjustification by faith\u201d in relevant social terms. To become \u201crighteous through faith\u201d means to accept the gospel of Christ\u2019s shameful death in behalf of the shamed, which means that all of us humans are equally honored. God is not the God of the Jews or the Gentiles alone, argues Paul at the end of Romans 3, because his righteousness is impartial. If we understood this, we would all be willing to stop crusading against each other, and to place ourselves under the same standards of international law, which would be the key to world peace.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>2. The challenge of the mission to the barbarians in Spain<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000This new approach to the theology of Romans is linked with the central purpose of this letter, which was to enlist Roman support for the mission to Spain. Here again, there is a surprise. In 1:14, Paul employs some discriminatory language by referring to \u201cGreeks and barbarians&#8230;wise and foolish.\u201d These terms articulate the social boundaries of Greco-Roman culture in a thoroughly abusive manner. As studies of \u03b2\u03ac\u03c1\u03b2\u03b1\u03c1o\u03c2 by Yves Albert Dauge and others have shown,<sup>9<\/sup> this is the \u201cN-\u201d word in Greco-Roman culture. When paired with its ideological opposite, \u201cGreeks,\u201d it denotes the violent, perverse, corrupt, uncivilized realm beyond and at times within the Roman Empire that threatens peace and security. There may be parallels here to the ancient Chinese view of the dangerous barbarians of the North. Similarly, the terms \u03c3o\u03c6\u03cc\u03c2 (\u201cwise\u201d) and \u03acv\u03bf\u03ae\u03c4o\u03c2 (\u201cunwise\/uneducated\u201d) depict the educational boundary between citizens of the Roman Empire and the shameful masses. But it is not just Paul\u2019s use of these epithets of honor and shame that jars the reader; he undercuts the moral premise of the Greco-Roman world in proclaiming his indebtedness to the shameful as well as to the honorable representatives of the antitheses.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000When the remarkable formulation is followed by the antithesis \u201cto the Jew first and also to the Greek\u201d in Rom 1:16-17, there is a reversal of the claim of ethnic priority that was being claimed by the Gentile Christian majority in Rome.<sup>10<\/sup> The reference to not being \u201cashamed of the gospel\u201d (1:16) also sets the tone for the entire subsequent letter. One can see from the parallel text in 1 Cor 1:20-31 that the gospel was innately shameful as far as ancient cultures were concerned. The message about a messianic redeemer being crucified was a \u201cstumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.\u201d A divine self revelation on an obscene cross seemed to demean God and overlook the honor and propriety of established religious traditions, both Jewish and Greco-Roman. Rather than appealing to the honorable and righteous members of society, such a gospel seemed designed to appeal to the despised and the powerless. To use the words of 1 Corinthians once again, \u201cGod chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong. God chose what is low and despised in the world &#8230;so that no one might boast in the presence of God.\u201d (1 Cor 1:27-29) There were powerful, social reasons why Paul should have been ashamed of this gospel; his claim not to be ashamed signals that a social and ideological revolution has been inaugurated by the gospel.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000This revolutionary viewpoint is directly related to the mission to Spain. In Rom 15:24, Paul refers to his plan to \u201csee you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be sped forward on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a little.\u201d The crucial element in verse 24 in relation to the Spanish mission is the expression \u201csend forward,\u201d or \u201csped onward\u201d which is perceived by commentators as something of a technical expression in early Christian missionary circles.<sup>11<\/sup> Paul is politely requesting logistical support for his mission project.<sup>12<\/sup> In 15:28, Paul says that after the offering has been delivered to Jerusalem, \u201cI shall go on by way of you to Spain.\u201d Again by implication this reference invites the Roman churches to become involved in the planning and support of the Spanish project.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000What was there about the Spanish mission that required such tactful preparation? If, indeed, the entire letter to the Romans is directly related to this project as I show in the commentary, why was it all necessary? Why did Paul not think it was feasible to start the mission in Spain as he had in Thessalonica or Corinth? Why not arrive without advanced notice or preparation, start preaching in a synagogue, find a local patron or patroness, and build a local congregation of converts? In light of information that is now available, we are now in a position to provide an informed answer to this question.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The first matter on which new information is available relates to the presence of Jewish population in Spain during the Julio-Claudian period. Older commentators assume the presence of Jewish communities in Spain, relying primarily on outdated information.<sup>13<\/sup> In fact evidence of substantial Jewish settlement in Spain does not appear until the third and fourth centuries C. E., as W. P. Bowers has shown.<sup>14<\/sup><\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The lack of Jewish settlement in Spain posed several large barriers to Paul\u2019s previous missionary strategy. Not only did this eliminate the prospects of Jewish converts to the gospel, but it also ruled out finding a group of God-fearers or proselytes in the Spanish cities to recruit as the initial core of Christian churches. There would be no initial interest in a messianic proclamation prepared by devotion to the Septuagint. The absence of synagogues also eliminated the avenues that Paul normally used to establish a base of operations in the Greek cities of the east. Wherever possible Paul began his missionary activities in local synagogues and move to an independent base of operations after troubles erupted or patrons and patronesses emerged.<sup>15<\/sup> Without a synagogue as a starting point, the crucial contacts with appropriate patrons would be extremely difficult to make, especially for a handworker of Paul\u2019s social class.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The absence of synagogues would pose a related economic problem, because Jewish travelers often used such buildings as convenient hostels and places to develop business contacts. In the case of Spain, prior arrangements for bases of operations and the recruitment of appropriate patrons would be required in the absence of the resources of local synagogues. Given the Roman domination of the economic resources in Spain and the high proportion of mines, industries, and estates directly owned and managed by the empire,<sup>16<\/sup> it would likely be necessary to approach this problem through persons close to administrators in Rome. The broad consequence of the lack of Jewish settlement is that the entire strategy of the Spanish mission needs to be reconceived.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000With regard to the Spanish cultural situation during the period of Paul\u2019s intended mission, I have discovered that Paul\u2019s reference to shameful \u201cbarbarians\u201d in Rom 1:14 would have included the Spaniards, from the Roman point of view. Despite the presence of a small, Romanized upper class in Spain, large portions of the peninsula were substantially untouched by the veneer of Roman civilization.<sup>17<\/sup> The rural population in particular and the northern portions of Spain specifically remained apart from Greco Roman culture. In general, \u201cthose who held Latin rights and were more or less Romanized formed a small minority of the population of Spain, while the status of the rest remained the same&#8230;\u201d<sup>18<\/sup> On the decisive question of the language spoken in Spain, the barriers to a Greek speaker like Paul were rather high. While Latin was spoken in the major cities, at least in part, and at times rather poorly, the \u201cIberians and Celt-Iberians of Spain spoke their own languages&#8230;\u201d<sup>19<\/sup> Recent studies of the cultural situation in Spain confirm this picture.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The situation in Spain presented Paul\u2019s missionary strategizing with formidable challenges both on the linguistic and political levels. Proclamation and instruction in Latin would be required, and there is no evidence that Paul was sufficiently fluent to carry this out without translators. Indeed, such resources would be difficult to develop, because the Hebrew scriptures were not yet available in Latin, and the first evidence we have of Latin-speaking churches is in the middle of the Second Century.<sup>20<\/sup> Even the church in Rome remained Greek speaking until the middle of the third century,<sup>21<\/sup> while elsewhere in the West the church was associated for centuries with Greek immigrants.<sup>22<\/sup> The translation of the gospel, the liturgy, and the instructional traditions into another language would be a substantial undertaking, especially in light of the fact that a range of additional translation resources would be required to extend past the restricted circle of Latin civilization in Spain. Since the Latinized urban centers functioned as outposts of Roman rule and civilization in ways quite different from the Greek speaking portions of the empire where Paul had scored his earlier successes, care would have to be taken to find local patrons who were not resented by the native population.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In sum, the Spanish mission required a level of planning and support that represented a huge leap from the improvised scheme of earlier Pauline missionizing.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>3. Overcoming Chauvinism within the Roman Congregations<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000When one understands the challenge of a mission to the \u201cbarbarians\u201d in Spain, it becomes clear why so much of Romans seeks to overcome chauvinistic behavior among the congregations in Rome. Since these congregations were treating each other as dangerous barbarians, refusing to accept each other, they were behaving much like the Romans had behaved in Spain. A mission under these circumstances would be perceived by the Spaniards as one more exercise in hateful Roman imperialism. This is why Paul spends so much time providing ways to overcome chauvinism.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In 14:13 and 15:7 there is an admonition to mutual \u201cwelcome\u201d in a context that commentators agree was closely related to the congregational situation. The specific ethic of the letter opens with the words, \u201cWelcome the one who is weak in faith, but not in order to dispute debatable points\u201d (Rom 14:1). This is a clear reference to the Jewish Christian conservatives, the \u201cweak\u201d who are being discriminated against by the Gentile Christian majority in Rome. The term \u201cweak\u201d was probably applied by the majority in a pejorative sense, depicting their opponents as persons too \u201cweak\u201d to break free from the Jewish law. It is likely that this group included some of the Jewish Christian exiles mentioned in chapter 16 who are now returning to Rome after the lapse of the Edict of Claudius. Following the reconstruction of Wolfgang Wiefel, it appears that they were not being accepted back into the groups they had earlier helped to form. Conflicts over theology, ethics, worship, and leadership had emerged. As we can tell from the wording of Paul\u2019s admonition, when they were admitted into these congregations, it was \u201cto dispute debatable points,\u201d that is, to get them in a corner and show them what\u2019s what. Paul insists instead on an unconditional form of welcome, in which liberals were to accept conservatives without trying to change them. As we can see from the wording of 15:7, Paul extends this principle both ways: \u201cWelcome one another, therefore&#8230;\u201d This fits the argument of 14:1-15:7 which forbids mutual conversion of opponents in the church: each side is to build up the other, protecting the integrity of those whose theology and cultures lead them to different perspectives and practices in the church.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In Romans 16 Paul greets a large number of persons whom he had met in previous missionary activities in the eastern half of the Mediterranean world. They are now back in Rome, which correlates with what we know about official Roman policy. In C. E. 49 the Emperor Claudius issued an edict banning Jewish agitators from Rome because of uproars over a certain \u201cChrestus.\u201d I still accept the standard inference that conflicts between Christian evangelists and Jewish zealots and traditionalists in the Roman synagogues led to this edict that disrupted both synagogue and church life in the city until the end of Claudius\u2019 career in C. E. 54. The book of Acts indicates that Priscilla and Aquila, whom Paul greets in 16:3-5, were refugees forced out of Rome whom Paul met in Corinth when he arrived there in the winter of C. E. 50. Other likely refugees mentioned in chapter 16 are Epaenetus, Mary, Andronicus and Junia, Ampliatus, Urbanus, Stachys, Apelles, Herodion, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Persis, Rufus and his mother. The most probable explanation for Paul\u2019s acquaintance with these early Christian leaders is that they met during exile. Paul knows that they have returned to the capitol of the empire during the peaceful, early years of the Nero administration before he writes in the winter of C. E. 56-57 from Corinth.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The massive study of Roman Christianity by Peter Lampe,<sup>23<\/sup> my colleague in Heidelberg, goes beyond these frequently accepted inferences to suggest the precise districts in the city where Christianity got its start. Using a topographic method based on the coincidence between five different types of archeological and literary evidence, Lampe showed that two of the most likely areas for early Christian house churches were in Trastevere and the section on the Appian Way around the Porta Capena inhabited by the immigrants. These are the slum districts where slaves and handworkers lived, the most shamed element in the population of Rome, whose names surface in chapter 16.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000This theme of inclusive welcome of shameful outsiders is continued in the repeated formulas of chapter 16. \u201cGreet so and so\u201d is repeated 21 times in this chapter, in various forms. The meaning of the term \u201cgreet\u201d in the Greco-Roman culture is actually to put one\u2019s arms around the other, to hug or kiss them as a sign of welcome. It was ordinarily done when a guest enters the house or space of a host. So the implication of this repeated admonition is the same as we found in 14:1 and 15:7, to welcome people into your love feasts.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The climax in this request for mutual welcome, which would overcome the conflicts between these early Christian groups, is found in 16:16, \u201cgreet one another with a holy kiss.\u201d In contrast to much of the kissing in the modern world, in Paul\u2019s time it was primarily a family matter. One kissed family members when meeting them. In the case of early Christian groups, the holy kiss sealed the solidarity of extended family. It said, in effect, you are my \u201cbrother\u201d or \u201csister;\u201d it is the ultimate expression of honor. And in view of the fact that most Christians did not own homes, the kiss was extended when they met for their common meals. It was a regular feature in the early Christian love feasts. What I would like to point out, however, is that to \u201cgreet one another\u201d in this manner would overcome the hostilities and prejudices between early Christian groups, and make them ready to participate in the mission to the imperial outsiders in Spain.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000This gospel of generous grace has been betrayed by Christian chauvinism, thwarting the mission to unify the world, just as in Paul\u2019s time, it threatened the possibility of a successful mission to the barbarians in Spain.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>4. New light on the thesis of Romans<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The thesis of Romans is that the righteousness of God is the greatest power in the world. In 1:16, Paul writes that the gospel \u201cis the power of God for salvation, for all who believe.\u201d The gospel of Christ shamefully crucified shatters all efforts to retain claims of cultural superiority. It is revealed in Christ, whose death expressed divine love at its height and exposed human depravity at its depth. Christ revealed the deepest dilemma of religion, that it can be misused as a means of status acquisition, leading us to say, \u201cWe are more righteous than you,\u201d and \u201cWe know better than you how to achieve freedom and peace.\u201d This is why Paul insists that this transformation is available to all who believe, whether Greco-Romans or barbarians. The righteousness of God overturns the unjust systems of honor and shame that each nation and group creates, showing that all humans are equally loved by God with a holy, impartial, righteous passion. This power demands mutual acceptance of others. This has not been understood by western interpreters, who since the Reformation have devoted their energies to define the correct doctrine of justification so as to prove the superiority of their group of believers. This leads western commentators to disregard the significance of the climactic, final chapters of Romans that call for mutual acceptance in place of theological exclusion of fellow believers. We return to this theme in the final lecture that identifies the interpolations of 16:17-20 and 16:25-27 as early efforts to avoid the tolerant implications of Paul\u2019s argument and to establish intolerant exclusion as the norm advocated by Paul.<\/p><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000In fact, Paul devotes 16 chapters of his longest letter to demonstrate how divine righteousness as revealed in Christ should be understood and lived out. This has a direct bearing on how the \u201cGod of peace\u201d in 15:33 and the global reconciliation of 15:7-13 should be understood. If divine righteousness is indeed impartial, then in the international arena, we should treat other nations as equals under international law. In the church arena similar to the situation of congregational competition that Paul was facing in Rome, it means inviting members of other groups into one\u2019s own love feasts that celebrate the <em>koinonia<\/em> established by the shameful death of Christ in behalf of the shamed. It is in mutual greetings of one another, through the holy kiss at the beginning of our meetings together, that the redemptive power of divine righteousness is spread.<\/p><h3 class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color: #235ba8; font-size: 24px;\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h3><p align=\"\u201cjustify\u201d\">\u3000\u3000The time has come in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century for the true nature of early Christian communalism, the issue of barbarian shame, the insight about the perversion of religion into a means of gaining honor, and the message concerning the impartial righteousness of God to become clear. In face of the violent campaigns of contemporary Christians, Muslims and Jews that reflect distorted visions of divine righteousness, and illusions about the capacity to achieve the good through violence, the gospel of Christ shamefully crucified remains supremely relevant. This gospel of divine righteousness is the true power center of the universe, overcoming shameful status where ever it remains, and making us know that we are all God\u2019s beloved children wherever we may be on that great circle from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. In Christ the line between the barbarians and the citizens of imperial centers, wherever they may be located, has been definitively erased.
