“Icons are not easy to ‘read’. They do not immediately speak to our senses… They do not reveal themselves to us at first sight… When an icon speaks, it speaks to the heart that seeks God” ~ Nouwen (2016) This course guides students to ‘read’ icons through understanding the basics of icon painting, appreciating the art of icon painting, and experiencing icons as a tool for personal and/or group prayer, so as to experience the transformation of the “pictorial word of God” and connect with the Lord with a humble heart. Contents: 1. A brief history of icon painting 2. Discover the artistic characteristics of icon painting and the meaning of painting techniques 3. Understand and reflect on the role of icon painting in church liturgy and prayer 4. Icon Painting Spiritual Experience 1: Praying with the Saint 5. Icon Painting Spiritual Experience II: Visual Reading and Silent Prayer 6. Icon Painting Spiritual Experience III: Rubbing in Prayer 7. Icon painting spiritual experience 4: Coloring during prayer 8. Explore the daily spiritual practice of icon painting and summarize it |
