Three Opened Doors

Leung Lai-mau (M.Div. 1) Lai-mau, Ziwei and a pair of children are suddenly pressed. More than ten years ago, a brother asked me, "Will you serve full-time in the future?" I answered without hesitation, "Maybe until I retire!" He said, "Will that be too long?" I answered casually, "Then please pray for me, hoping that I can retire earlier!" In fact, I am not opposed to full-time service, but I am not moved in my heart. ...

Views of a "Veteran" Teacher Regarding Recent Developments at HKBTS

Dr. Jerry Moye Emeritus Professor of Old Testament and Spirituality Transformation through Time In 1973, I started teaching at Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary. At that time, there were no Chinese professors with doctoral degrees among the faculty. Now, however, we have a considerable number of well-educated Chinese professors who have obtained doctoral degrees from some of the most prestigious institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States. In my first ten years at the Seminary, I did not have many students in my classes. I remember one year, there were only two graduates from the Basic Theology course. Today, the Seminary has many graduates every year from various courses, and we offer more than one Basic Theology course. ...

Thoughts on the ThM Program

Dr. Wong Fook-kong Professor of Old Testament The Master of Theology program at our college is a program that allows students to study the Bible (Old Testament or New Testament) and explore theology in more depth. This depth is difficult to achieve in basic courses such as Master of Divinity or Bachelor of Theology. In many seminaries in the United States (including the seminary I attended), the Master of Theology program is equivalent to the first year of the doctoral program. "HKTS" has similar requirements. In order to make the doctoral students in theology more solid in certain areas of knowledge, we sometimes require them to take some Master of Theology courses according to individual circumstances. For this reason, Master of Theology students majoring in the Bible must be able to read the original languages of the Bible (Hebrew and...

What Have I Gained

Lui Kin-sang (Graduated 2010) Acting Senior Pastor of Causeway Bay Baptist Church I completed my Master of Divinity course at a seminary of another denomination. The Cornerstone of Truth Stands Tall

Sou Ka-fai (Graduated in 2008) Acting Senior Pastor of Shatin Baptist Church "Theology" refers to the study of topics related to God. The scope of the field is so vast that one cannot fathom it even if one spends a lifetime. I felt that my understanding of theology was quite shallow in the past, and studying for a master's degree in theology gave me the opportunity to enter the world of theology. Through reading, thinking, analysis, discussion and reporting, coupled with the teacher's explanation, I have a deeper understanding and experience of faith. ...

What Studying Hard Is for?

Wong Shun-shing (Theology Student) I have always grown up and served in other denominations, and now as a master's student of theology at Baptist Theological Seminary, what experience do I have in this college that emphasizes the Baptist tradition? Thank God, my classmates who study with me and the teachers who "whip" us have given me a wonderful and special experience, which is a gift from the Lord. My gains are due to both the course arrangement and the hidden courses that are not noticed by others. ...

The Joy of Learning

Chan Hop-ying (Biblical Studies Student) I still remember that when I finished my Master of Divinity, I thought about how I had spent ten years studying work-related courses before I started studying theology. Ministry is a lifelong process. Three years of basic theology courses passed by quickly, and I had to leave campus before I could deepen what I had learned. In order to have a better effect in the ministry of biblical teaching, I had the idea of continuing my studies when I graduated. It was difficult to do both pastoral work and further studies, so I chose to focus on church ministry first. Two years later, the church added several preaching colleagues to share the burden of ministry, and I thought it was the right time to enroll in the Master of Divinity program. ...

Genuinely Putting Faith in Practice

Tang Oi-wah (Theology Student) When I share with others that my calling is mission, I often get this response: "Oh! Then why do you still spend time studying for a master's degree in theology?" The puzzled tone made me reflect. Since when did people separate theology and practice into two unrelated things? What kind of faith is the practice without theological reflection? ...
