Walking on Nin Ming Road: Reflection on Education and Theological Education

Chow Pui-shan, Director of Distance Education Program: This year marks exactly ten years since I began walking Nian Ming Road. Nian Ming Road has taken me through three years of studying for a Master of Divinity and three years of studying for a Master of Theology, and has also led me to the distance education program and my role as a co-worker in this department. For me, Nian Ming Road is a path to education, leading me to theological education at Baptist Theological Seminary and, subsequently, to serving God here. The narrow and long Nian Ming Road is crisscrossed by the figures of teachers, co-workers, and students. When classes began at the end of August this year, the road was filled with many new footprints. The youthful energy of these new students, freshly embarking on Nian Ming Road and preparing for their full-time ministry, has added a new dimension to the landscape of Baptist Theological Seminary on Nian Ming Road and has also sparked my reflections on education and theological education. ...

A New Chapter

Au Siu-yin (M.Div.) Three years ago, in the midsummer, I began a new chapter in my life at Baptist Theological Seminary with trepidation. I entered seminary to be trained because my calling from God was clear, and I had a deep peace and assurance in my heart. However, since my home was quite far from the seminary, the daily commute to school was long and physically exhausting. Furthermore, having left school nearly twenty years ago, and considering my advanced age, reentering a new environment and pursuing a full-time program was a tremendous challenge. Furthermore, balancing my demanding studies with family life and church service was no easy feat. Looking back now, I can't fully recall how I navigated these challenges and pressures. I only know that God's grace remained unwavering throughout this period, and it only grew more abundant!

Without Regrets

Law Ming-yuen, Bachelor of Arts in Ministry (BAPS), remembers running into Dean Cao Weitong after a morning assembly in my first year. He asked me if I regretted attending Baptist Theological Seminary. I replied, "No." Now, after four years in this great family of Baptist Theological Seminary, I am even more deeply grateful to God for leading me to this seminary and to learn and grow within this community of faith. ...

Months and Years at HKBTS

He Shiyong (MCS), Master of Christian Studies. First Chronicles 29:15 records David's words: "For we are strangers and sojourners before you, as all our fathers were." Similar words appear in Genesis, Psalms, and Hebrews. These words resonate particularly deeply with me, as I am "a stranger in a strange land." Coming to Hong Kong to study alone, I deeply feel the hardships of travel. Sometimes, looking at the Liu Yuesheng Memorial Building on campus, I wonder, "Would the pioneers who migrated to Hong Kong and founded Baptist Theological Seminary also have felt the same hardships of travel?" This is how God places us in this great tide, allowing us to endure various trials along the journey and to gain supplies at various stops, where we rest, heal, and gain strength, so that we can deeply understand the truth of our faith—that the Lord Jesus not only gives us life, but also gives us life to the fullest. ...

God’s Call to Me Remains Unchanged for Ten Years

Chan Tsz-chiu (M.Div. 1) On the edge of "determination" and "giving up" As early as ten years ago, I had the idea of serving full-time in my heart. In the past period of time, I have been constantly on the edge of "determination" and "giving up" - I have made up my mind and longed to be used by God; I have also been discouraged and shed tears, refusing to respond to the Lord's call. ...

The Fisher-girl Chosen by God

Lai Suk-fun (M.Div. 1) The little wish of a “fisherman’s daughter” “You formed my inmost being; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13) I deeply understand the meaning of this verse because I was born into a Christian family and followed my mother to church in her womb. Being able to come into contact with the gospel and know the Lord Jesus since childhood is the best gift my parents gave me and the most beautiful blessing in my life. ...

It Is Quality That Counts in Church Music Ministry

Sanson Lau Director of Edna Wong Christian Worship Arts and Education Center In the past 10 to 20 years, European and American countries have successively implemented educational reforms, and similar movements have been launched in regions that are deeply influenced by the European and American economy and culture, such as Japan, Taiwan, and even Hong Kong. Unfortunately, the reforms in various places are all based on the economy, so that the right to speak and the right to make decisions on educational ideals, ideas, directions, and policies mostly fall into the hands of senior officials who are in charge of financial affairs. Naturally, the educational ideal has shifted from the more metaphysical orientation of "cultivating the whole person", "developing a complete personality", and "seeking truth, goodness, and beauty" to considering what equipment the educated people should have when they grow up in today's world of "infinite economic life". ...

Don’t Be the Older Son

Ip Yuen-cheong (M.Div. 3) Scripture: Luke 15:1-32 (Reference: Luke 16:14) From the perspective of "loss" If one day you find your cell phone is missing while you are out, how would you react? Damn! You would search everywhere, even if you are late to find it! Desk? Computer desk? Then go to the bedroom, kitchen, and finally use the home phone to call the cell phone number. If you hear a ringing sound somewhere, you will breathe a sigh of relief. If there is no ringing sound, it is terrible! ...
