Disciple ‧ Missionary

Leung Bik-yu (M.Div. 1) An Awakening: Learning to Be a Disciple of the Lord I grew up in a non-Christian family. God miraculously arranged for me to attend a Christian secondary school, giving me the opportunity to know Jesus Christ. When I first believed in the Lord, I always longed to experience God, but the foundation of my faith was not solid. When I was in college, I enrolled in the discipleship training course of Campus Crusade for Christ. I realized that God not only wants us to trust in Him, but also calls us to become His disciples and give the sovereignty of our lives to Him. At the same time, I also realized that the Great Commission is the command given by the Lord to every disciple. This awakening made me begin to learn how to be a disciple of the Lord, and also how to preach the gospel and make disciples. Later, at a camp, I heard this message for the first time—there are still many people in the world who have never heard the name of Jesus! This message was like a warning rang in my ears, and I was heartbroken for the many people who have not had the opportunity to hear the gospel. ...

It Is You Who Wants Me to Let Go

Fung Wing-mui (B.Th.1) The Stumble and Search of LoveWhen I was a teenager, I was very rebellious and selfish, always wanting to attract attention. My home has been full of noise since I was a child. I hated this home and longed for love from others, so I started dating in Form 9. In 2003, my boyfriend of five years broke up with me. I felt very hurt. I cried every day when I woke up. I gradually lost motivation for everything, even my studies. ...

The Same Call at the Same Place

Fong King-yan (M.Div. 1) I suddenly felt that my career as a player was over. I decided to believe in the Lord in 2003. Unfortunately, I only had a vague understanding of Jesus' salvation at that time, and the gospel seed only fell on shallow soil. Over the next few years, I made rugby my life and gradually stopped attending parties. During college, I spent five or six days a week training and competing, and my relationship with my family became increasingly alienated, and I ignored their advice. ...

Students’ Testimonies of God’s Call

There are two couples among our freshmen this school year, Jingren and Yongmei are one of them. This issue of "Hospital News" published three testimonies of being called, the first two of which were written by Jingren and Yongmei. I hope that readers can see from their stories how God’s calling comes to a couple separately, and how God uses miraculous works to lead His children to embark on the path of dedication at the same time. ...

God’s Justice Is Unlike Ours (I)

Freeman Huen Assistant Professor of Practical Theology (Social Ethics) "Why can't we use force to fight for justice?" After the changes in the political situation in Hong Kong in recent years, the social fabric of Hong Kong has become increasingly torn apart, and people with different political views have been fighting against each other. As a result, such voices have begun to emerge in society. Some Christians are unable to resist the temptation of violence with the gospel of peace, and even some within the church have raised the same question. In their eyes, upholding justice, upholding righteousness, and expelling evil, as well as helping the weak and combating the strong, are the church's top social missions. Some believers even advocate "resisting violence with force" in a righteous manner, fully believing that such "sacrifice for righteousness" is most like Christ. ...

To Sow in Tears in a Dry Land

Lau Sze-yan (M.Div. 3) Scripture: Psalm 126:1-6 (Revised Union Version) The Lord has done great things for us. In recent morning meetings, we have had the opportunity to hear many new students share their testimonies of being called. Most of them mentioned that they had never thought of studying theology or becoming pastors. Many students struggled or were reluctant to embark on the path of full-time ministry. I know a fledgling preacher, but his situation is different. He was called in his sophomore year of college, and after graduation he wanted to receive theological training immediately, but he didn't get his wish. He started working in society, waiting for the day when he could enter the seminary. Five years passed, and eight years passed, and he was still waiting, waiting for God's time. He couldn't help but wonder: Is God really calling me? How long do I have to wait? ...

The Characteristics of a Preacher

Choy Lai-shun (M.Div. 3) Scripture: Acts 8:26-40 Introduction Today I will share with you the story of Philip preaching the gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch and learn from it. From Acts 8:5-6, we know that Philip could not only preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, but also perform miracles, and his gospel work in Samaria had quite good results. Verse 6 says, "And the people with one accord obeyed Philip's words, when they heard and saw these miracles which he did." Verse 8 further says, "And there was great joy in that city." This is a really beautiful picture! I believe that everyone must expect their gospel work to have such results. We all look forward to our gospel objects "with one accord obeying" our words and "with great joy." However, we also understand that the results of the gospel work are not something we can fully control. Because this is the scope of the Holy Spirit's work, just as Paul taught the Corinthian church, he said: "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth." (1 Corinthians 3:6) As preachers, what we can do is to plant and water, and think about how to do our duty. Therefore, today, through Philip's story of preaching the gospel to the Ethiopian eunuch, let us think together: What qualities should a preacher have? What qualities should we learn? ...

The Full Extent of Jesus' Love

To Wan-ting (M.Div. 3) Scripture: John 13:1-20 Demonstration of loving to the end I know a director of a nursing home. She is a Christian and is over 70 years old. Before she retired, she personally took care of every resident in the nursing home every day. The residents are all severely disabled and mentally retarded. All their daily activities require care. The director prepares breakfast at 5 o'clock in the morning, feeds them with two other sisters, helps them bathe and change clothes, and takes them to special schools... In short, the residents' daily life and diet are taken care of meticulously. When the director reached a certain age, she had to retire and let the caregivers take care of them. ...

The Preaching of Preachers-in-Training

Preaching is an extremely important ministry for evangelists. They must be loyal to their calling throughout their lives, explain God’s words with all their heart, and undertake the ministry of preaching. The "Graduation Preaching" restored by the college more than seven years ago is to allow a group of prospective evangelists who are about to graduate to practice in preaching service, experience God's grace in it, and receive encouragement from the entire college community. , reminders and blessings. ...

The Sharing of Students in Certificate in Life and Death Education from a Christian Perspective Program 2023-24

There are many life and death education courses in the market, but most of them are fragmented lectures that fail to specifically and comprehensively deconstruct the issues of life and death. Thanks to the Baptist Theological Education Department for offering this course, which allows me to connect Christian theology with life and death education, and to understand other religions’ views on life and death. This course helped me learn how to face death calmly, understand "transitioning from death to life", and actively face the difficulties of life and death. I also learned to understand the feelings of bereaved people and walk with those who grieve. ...
