Unity in Diversity

Jonathan Lo Assistant Professor of New Testament Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary has a group of talented teachers with different gifts and expertise. "Collaborative teaching" allows us to use our unique talents while working together to move towards a common goal. According to Ephesians 4:11-13, the goal is “…to equip the saints for the work of service, so that the body of Christ may be edified, until we all reach the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (RSV). The body of Christ is unity in diversity; the role of seminaries is to teach students love, peace, and harmony while encouraging them to pursue their own unique identities, passions, and gifts. We must embrace diversity because only in diversity can we achieve true unity; only through true unity can we grow and experience the full stature of Christ. ...

An Interdisciplinary Exploration

Wong Fook-kong Professor of Old Testament and his team of professors co-teach the "Research and Writing" and "Graduate Seminar" every year. The "Church Worship Studies" course in the fall of the 2014-15 academic year also adopts the "collaborative teaching" approach. Team Teaching with HKBTS Characteristics

Brian Lam Chaplain, Director of Field Education and Lecturer of Practical Theology The first subject I co-taught with a teacher was "Basic Preaching" in the spring of 2008 with Ms. Sun Baoling. Teacher Sun is in charge of the master's class, and I am in charge of the bachelor's class. For the first four classes, both classes attended together. Teacher Sun is responsible for the first and second lectures, and I am responsible for the third and fourth lectures. In class, we had a lot of interactions, and our classmates said they benefited a lot. After four classes, the bachelor's and master's classes were separated and students began to practice preaching in class. ...

Vincent Lau Assistant Professor of Practical Theology (Christian Ethics) A few years ago, after two colleagues from the Department of Practical Theology resigned, I was assigned to teach the "Pastoral Leadership and Ministry" course of the Master of Divinity programme starting from 2012-13 academic year. Rotational Teaching with Flying Colors

Grace Chan Associate Chaplain and Lecturer of Church Music In 2014, I co-taught the course "Church Worship Studies" with teachers from the Bible and Christian Thought departments, a total of five people. Since this subject is an interdisciplinary study, it requires the integration of various fields, with equal emphasis on theory and practice. Before the course started, several of us teachers met to discuss the course’s objectives, scope, key content, and homework requirements, so as to help students think about the church’s worship ministry from multiple perspectives, including the Bible, theology, church history, church tradition and rituals, church worship ministry and pastoral care, ethical practice, and modern cultural context. The classes were taught by teachers from different disciplines who took turns teaching the corresponding topics; I was mainly responsible for coordination, observing each class and teaching the second half of the class. I try to integrate the Bible, theology, history and other fields, and then apply them to the church worship ministry to see how to apply and practice them. ...

When Teachers Become “Co-learners”

Freeman Huen Assistant Professor of Practical Theology (Social Ethics) If one studies alone without friends, he will be ignorant and uninformed. ——"Book of Rites: Learning" In the past six years, the elective courses I co-taught with other teachers included "Church Theology" (Spring 2015-16) and "Velimon: Worship, Ethics, and Preaching" (Spring 2017-18). I am planning to have the opportunity to teach a course called "Theology of Praying" with Professor Deng Shaoguang in the future.

Positive Sparks from Teacher-Student Interactions

Andres Tang Professor of Christian Thought (Theology and Culture) In addition to "Research and Writing" and "Graduate Seminar", the courses I have co-taught with other teachers in recent years include "Church Worship Studies", "Church Theology", "Welmon: Worship, Ethics, and Preaching", etc. The easiest teaching arrangement is for each teacher to explain the same topic according to his or her own expertise, but in this case, there is a lack of interaction between teachers. Although students can listen to the professional knowledge of different teachers in the same subject, it is difficult for them to see the whole picture. Therefore, some thought must be put into classroom design. ...

On Team Teaching at HKBTS

President Joshua Cho Many subjects at Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary (HKBS) adopt the “team teaching” model, which means two or more teachers work together to plan and teach the same subject. * Teachers may take turns teaching, or interact with each other, or one teacher teaches while other teachers observe and supplement... There are many different forms of teaching, and they are flexible and varied. In recent years, the core courses regularly offered by HKTSC in a teacher-teaching mode include "Research and Writing", "Graduation Seminar", "Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling" and "Pastoral Leadership and Ministry". In addition, in response to circumstances and needs, there are also quite a few core and elective courses offered in this mode (see attached table); some of these courses are taught by five or six teachers, and are very popular and colorful, including "Church Worship Studies" in the fall of 2014 and "Church Theology" in the spring of 2016. ...
