Learning How to Pray from Samuel Wells and Stanley Hauerwas

Dr. Freeman Huen Assistant Professor of Practical Theology (Social Ethics) Samuel Wells was invited to Hong Kong in March this year to be the speaker of the "Whitestone Lecture" of our college, leading the church to reflect on prayer, pastoral care, and mission, with the theme of "Being with God". Because of this opportunity, I had the honor to consult him on topics such as theology, ethics, and spirituality of prayer. When talking about a book I recently translated, Stanley...

Wrestling with Oneself

Chiang Sau-kuan (M.Div.) Four years ago, I dragged my small suitcase and set foot on the road to Nianming before the start of school. I still remember that moment when I felt relieved and thought only: "Where you lead me!" At that time, I did not understand God's calling, but only knew to entrust myself to Him. I never thought that four years later, God would not want me to leave my hometown, my people, and my family to go to a special place, but led me to return to Macau to learn to pastor His church in this small city. ...

Changed Forever

Tsang Wai-hung (B.Th.) I started writing on 25 August 2015 at 10am, which happened to be the opening ceremony of the seminary. This year I am no longer a student, and my student life has come to an end. Looking back on the past four years of studying theology, I found that it was a journey of "knowing God, recognizing faith, and knowing myself", and it was also a journey that made me different. ...

Experiencing Unbounded Grace and Advancing Fearlessly

Leung Pui-sang (M.Div.) The three years of studying theology passed quickly. When I first entered school, I was still trembling with fear. I had all kinds of worries in my heart, such as financial needs, homework exams, and the direction of ministry. Now that I have graduated, I see that the road is full of peace and joy given by God, and God's endless grace! ...

The End Becomes the Beginning

Kam Wai-man (M.Div. 1) Two Ends I was born into a poor family, and my parents worked hard outside all day. As the eldest daughter, I had to take care of my three younger siblings and my frail grandmother when I was a teenager. I silently accepted this job as the "big boss". Since I was a child, I felt that the burden of life was heavy and the future was bleak. When I was in high school, I decided to believe in the Lord in a gospel camp and began to grow up in the church. I got rid of the depression of my youth and received the abundant life given by God. Looking back on those years, I am really grateful for the care and help of my high school teachers and church mentors. ...

God’s Unique Program of Study

Lo Wan-wah (M.Div. 1) It turns out that the time has not come yet. I do not come from a Christian family, but I am very grateful that I believed in the Lord when I was a child. At that time, my aunt took me to the church's children's worship and also attended the children's Sunday school when I was five years old. There were only three children in the Sunday school at that time, but there were two teachers. They taught very hard, and I believed in the Lord at that time. When I grew up, I went to Canada to study mechanical engineering. In my first year of university, I had the honor of attending the winter conference in western Canada. When the speaker called us to serve in the ministry, I raised my hand and responded, walked to the front of the stage and made up my mind. After that, I participated in the work of campus fellowship and also served as a volunteer in some Christian organizations. Friends laughed at me for serving full-time and studying part-time. Although I was busy serving at that time, I felt the joy of serving the Lord. ...

A New Model Designed for Christian Life Coaching

Roy Chan Associate Professor of Practical Theology (Life Coaching, Psychology and Recreational Ministry) Life coaching is a relatively new term. It is a new skill that is sought after in modern management, training, counseling, education and other fields. The Christian community has also begun to promote the education of Christian life coaches. Is it appropriate to use a skill developed in the business world in Christian management, training and counseling? I remember the first time I introduced Christian life coaching in a church fellowship. When I talked about the need for people to pursue their own dreams and goals, a brother asked: "Is pursuing personal dreams and preferences too individualistic and ignoring God's plan in our lives?"...

Discernment and “Finding the Will of God”

Jonathan W. Lo Assistant Professor, New Testament Hong Kong is currently experiencing a period of turmoil, and the need for discernment has never been more urgent. Amid political uncertainty, social unrest, and social divisions, the challenge facing Christians in Hong Kong is to make informed and wise decisions in an atmosphere of instability, distrust, fear, and misinformation. Discernment is the ability to make appropriate decisions; and Christian discernment is the realization that the best decisions we can make in any situation are those that are close to God's will. In these confusing times, it is more important than ever to hear God's voice in the chaos. ...

Discernment, Beginning with “Who Jesus Really Is”

Andres Tang Professor of Christian Thought (Theology and Culture) Christian discernment begins with discerning "Who is Jesus?" We live in the world and inevitably receive voices from all directions every day, teaching us how to be human and how to live. But among these many voices, how should we discern? As Christians, where should we start our first discernment? ...
