Repair, Restore, and Reconcile

Tsang King-chung M.Div. Student Group 3 (To Kwa Wan) Group photo "Tujia" After the tour guide led our group of 20 people to complete the tour in the old district of To Kwa Wan, he gave us an additional itinerary, which was to visit a dilapidated rooftop. This rooftop is on the roof of a tenement building in the district. As this place has been abandoned for a long time and the building is about to be rebuilt, the residents of the surrounding areas simply regard this place as a garbage collection station and dump all their old furniture and electrical appliances here to save the effort of taking them to the garbage station on the street. One day, some residents couldn't stand it anymore and decided to clean up the place. But there was a lot of garbage, so they contacted the volunteers from "Maintain Hong Kong" who had been helping them repair electrical appliances on a voluntary basis to clean it up together. It is said that the volunteers spent at least seven days of their spare time, using a human chain to carry all the garbage, big and small. Today this place is very tidy and painted with beautiful pictures. It has become a place to watch the sunset and for children to play. ...

Toiling Silently after the Example of Jesus Christ

Ng Pun-pun M.Div. Student Group 2 (To Kwa Wan) Group photo In the afternoon of spiritual practice, we went to To Kwa Wan for a community survey. The community guide led us to "Tujia" (To Kwa Wan Story House). It provides a place to support community residents, bring neighbors together, and build a network of mutual assistance through simple home repairs. They are quietly "working hard" in the community. Isn't this what the missionaries who came to China did in the past? ...

Sowing the Seeds of Change under Urban Renewal

Tsang Wun-lam B.Th. Student Group 1 (Yau Ma Tei) Group photo The first community we visited was Yau Ma Tei. The tour guide took the students into the streets and alleys of Yau Ma Tei, allowing us to get to know this old community that is facing reconstruction. We first came to Portland Street. There are several cross-border direct bus stations here, and next to it is a new cluster of hotels that stand out among the surrounding old district facilities. The tour guide pointed out that the development of Hong Kong's tourism industry has led to the closure of many old-fashioned shops. As small shops closed down, the personal connections gradually faded away, and the strong human touch of the old community is no longer there. ...

Going into the Community and Sowing the Seeds of Change

On January 16 this year, our college held a "Spiritual Training Day" to prepare teachers and students for the new academic season. The theme of this time is "Going into the Community", but how can understanding and serving the community be spiritual exercises? What does it mean to “work hard” in the community? How does all this relate to evangelism and missionary mission? ...

Campus Extension Project III: A Short Introduction to Its Development

Celia Lam Juergens Dean of Administrative Affairs Conception of the New Teaching and Research Building The seminary has made great progress in curriculum innovation, professorial team and other aspects over the past few years, and the number of students has continued to increase. In order to support the college’s long-term development, the Board of Directors established the “School Development Planning Committee” in early 2016 with the aim of fully understanding the college’s development needs and formulating relevant plans. The "School Development Planning Committee" immediately set up a "Building Team" under its jurisdiction and invited gifted professionals to serve as consultants to assist the college administration in handling land lease amendment matters and provide professional advice on how to effectively use the school space. After carefully reviewing the development conditions of the college, the "School Development Planning Committee" recommended to the Board of Directors to build a teaching and research building on campus. The proposal was accepted by the Board of Directors and handed over to the "Construction Team" to implement the proposal. All faculty and students of our college have been provided with the latest information on campus expansion, and professors have also provided suggestions on the facilities required for the development of teaching and research in the college. The "Architecture Group" and professor representatives, together with the architects, exchanged ideas and came up with the design of the new building. ...

Expanding the Disciple Community of “Faith, Hope, and Love” and Campus Extension

President Joshua Cho I still remember that nine years ago when I first took office as president, a member who cared deeply about our institute took the initiative to propose to me that he was willing to donate a considerable amount of money to our institute for the construction of a new building. At that time, I thought that I had just taken office as the dean and the seminary was in a state of disrepair. I only wanted to seek God’s guidance to teach me how to lead the seminary out of the gloom and depression. I must not let down the love that the brothers and sisters have given to the seminary, but everything must be in accordance with God's timing. The most urgent task is to get the seminary back on track, so I made up my mind before God, to work quietly on the soil given by God, the seminary, and wait for the time prepared by God to come. ...
